SkyPilot Reading Series Kicks Off with OCCUPATION Image

After launching a national search for submissions for its 2019 Runway staged reading series, the award-winning SkyPilot Theatre Company announces its first selection, Occupation, which will be performed Wednesday, March 20 at 8pm at Oh My Ribs! Theater, 6468 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles. The production is open to the public with tickets for $5 at the door.

SkyPilot, a well-established greenhouse for the development of new theatrical works, is celebrating its second year of SkyPilot Runway, a play reading series that helps to develop new plays in the early drafts stage. The readings are rehearsed, staged, on their feet and performed with scripts-in-hand, immediately followed by a focused feedback session with a moderator, the playwright, and the audience

Each reading will also be recorded as a podcast, presented in the same style as the staged performance, then made available through iTunes, Google Play and other podcast outlets as well as on SkyPilot's website. After the March 20th performance, SkyPilot will announce the other plays chosen for the rest of the season.

Occupation, written by Tom Seidman and directed by Carey, follows Tom Steiner, a middle-aged trust funder and his protective wife Carol as they welcome their son Zack home to Malibu after a week with the Occupy movement in downtown Los Angeles. With Zack is his tent-mate Raf, an enigmatic young man from the streets of South Central. Also present is the Steiner's hedge fund manager neighbor Mitch. When an expensive watch goes missing, it leads to an explosive confrontation between left and right, rich and poor, idealism and reality.

Seidman is a writer and independent feature filmmaker who has produced, written and/or directed four features and has directed several theatrical productions in Los Angeles. His screenplay The Gravity Spot won the 2015 Fade-In Magazine Award for best sci-fi script and was a semi-finalist at the Austin Writers Conference Screenplay competition. Occupation is the first full-length play he's written.
