Martin Haselböck Leads LACO's Baroque Conversations Program Tonight, 5/3

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) concludes its enlightening "Baroque Conversations" series with a program led by celebrated organist and early music artist Martin Haselböck, marking his LACO debut, tonight, May 3, 2012, 7 pm, at Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles.  

Haselböck, the esteemed music director of Musica Angelica, spotlights the Water Music of Handel and Telemann, conducting Handel's Water Music, Selections from Suite No. 1 in F major, HWV 348 and Water Music, Selections from Suite No. 2 in D major, HWV 349 as well as Telemann's Water Music Suite in C major, TWV 55:C3.  An organist of world reknown, Haselböck also leads Handel's Organ Concerto in F major, Op. 4, No. 4 from the keyboard.  In signature LACO style, Haselböck shares his insights into the music from the stage and invites questions from the audience.  A complimentary pre-concert wine reception for ticket holders begins at 6 pm.

LACO's "Baroque Conversations" series explores the genesis of orchestral repertoire from early Baroque schools through the pre-classical period.

Tickets ($50) are on sale now and may be purchased online at laco.org, by calling LACO at 213 622 7001 x 1, or at the venue box office on the night of the concert, if tickets remain.  Student rush tickets ($10), based on availability, may be purchased at the box office one hour prior to the concert with appropriate college ID.

LOS ANGELES CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (LACO), proclaimed "America's finest chamber orchestra" by Public Radio International, has established itself among the world's top musical ensembles. Since 1997, LACO has performed under the baton of acclaimed conductor and pianist Jeffrey Kahane, hailed by critics as "visionary" and "a conductor of uncommon intellect, insight and musical integrity" with "undeniable charisma."  Under Kahane's leadership, the Orchestra maintains its status as a preeminent interpreter of historical masterworks and a champion of contemporary composers.  During its 43-year history, the Orchestra has made 30 recordings, toured Europe, South America and Japan, performed across North America, earning adulation from audiences and critics alike, and garnered seven ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming. Headquartered in downtown Los Angeles, LACO presents seven Orchestral Series concerts at both Glendale's Alex Theatre and UCLA's Royce Hall, five Baroque Conversations concerts at downtown Los Angeles' Zipper Concert Hall, three Westside Connections chamber music concerts at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, three Family Concerts at the Alex Theatre and an annual Discover concert at Pasadena's Ambassador Auditorium.  In addition, LACO presents a Concert Gala, an annual Silent Film screening at Royce Hall and several fundraising salons each year.  LACO was founded in 1968.

Austrian conductor MARTIN HASELBÖCK hails from a famous family of musicians.  Early in his career, he gained an international reputation as an organ soloist, working with conductors Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Riccardo Muti and many others.  His recordings as organist have brought him numerous awards, including the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Diapason d'Or and Hungarian Liszt Prize.  He has released more than 50 CDs as soloist, including the recent release of the complete works for organ by Liszt on the NCA label.  Haselböck's immersion in the great repertoire of classical church music through his role as court organist of Vienna inspired him to establish the period-instrument orchestra Wiener Akademie in 1985. Under his direction, more than 60 recordings have been released with Wiener Akademie in repertoire ranging from Bach to the early 20th century.  He enjoys a busy career as a guest conductor with the world's leading orchestras, conducting the national philharmonic orchestras of major European cities, including the Wiener Symphoniker, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Dresdner Philharmonie, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Orchestre National de Lyon and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders.  He also leads an annual cycle of Viennese Classical works with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.  In North America, his conducting engagements have included concerts with the Pittsburgh, Washington, San Francisco, Detroit and Toronto symphony orchestras; Los Angeles Philharmonic; Philadelphia Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.  The esteemed music director of LA's Musica Angelica, he makes his Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra debut on LACO's Baroque Conversations in May 2012.  Haselböck has received numerous honors and awards, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art and the Prague Mozart Prize.
