LA Philharmonic Presents THE ENGLISH CONCERT, 10/11
The English Concert, led by celebrated Baroque specialist Harry Bicket, comes to Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, October 11, at 8 p.m., as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 2011/12 Baroque Variations series. Critically-acclaimed countertenor Andreas Scholl joins the ensemble for music by Purcell in his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut.
The evening's program includes Biber's Sonata a 6, Purcell's Three Airs, Scenes from King Arthur and Scenes from The Fairy Queen, and Muffat's Passacaglia from Sonata V.
The English Concert is among the finest chamber orchestras in the world, with an outstanding reputation for inspiring performances of Baroque and Classical music in the concert hall and on recordings. Bicket, who assumed the post of The English Concert's artistic director in 2007, is internationally renowned as an opera and concert conductor of great distinction, especially noted for his interpretation of Baroque and Classical repertoire. German countertenor Andreas Scholl is a committed recital artist, performs in the world's leading concert halls and festivals, and has released a series of extraordinary solo recordings. For his upcoming release, Scholl returns to his musical roots with his own selection of arias from Bach's Cantatas on a new album to be released on Decca on October 11, 2011.Scholl first sang the music of J.S. Bach as a boy chorister, and this new project - the follow-up to his much-praised Purcell collection O Solitude - perfectly matches his artistry and musical heritage. Scholl appears extensively throughout the U.S. this fall including appearances in New York at Carnegie Hall on October 20, and in Boston at Jordan Hall on October 23. From November 14 - December 10, Scholl reprises his role of Bertarido in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Rodelinda with Renee Fleming, conducted by Harry Bicket.
