Gypsy Tony Award for Best Revival Sells for $26,798

By:

The 1990 Tony Award for Best Revival awarded to producer Barry Brown for Gypsy sold last night for $26,798 at Nate D. Sanders Auctions.

The musical Gypsy, with lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim, premiered in 1959. The play was critically acclaimed and is considered by many critics to be the greatest musical of all-time.

Gypsy was revived for the second time on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on November 16, 1989. The revival was directed by Arthur Laurents and starred Tyne Daly, Jonathan Hadary and Crista Moore. At the Tony Awards, the production was awarded the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival and Daly won Best Actress in a Musical. Gypsy was performed 476 times until closing at the Marquis Theatre on July 28, 1991.

Bidding for the Tony began at $10,000.
