Gustavo Dudamel Brings ¡Bienvenido Gustavo! A Target Free Community Concert To The Hollywood Bowl 10/3

By:

Four years ago (September 13, 2005), Gustavo Dudamel made his U.S. debut at the Hollywood Bowl. Now, he makes his first appearance as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for ¡Bienvenido Gustavo!, a Target Free Community Concert at the iconic Hollywood Bowl, on Saturday, October 3, 2009. This unprecedented event celebrates the arrival of Gustavo Dudamel to his new home, the vibrant city of Los Angeles, as well as his life journey from a child in Venezuela to Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic - a journey that reflects the potential of many of Los Angeles' own youth. ¡Bienvenido Gustavo! draws on the many cultures and musical traditions of Los Angeles to create a tapestry of the community.

Renowned film composer John Williams chairs the all-star Artistic Advisory Panel - comprised of the inimitable Quincy Jones, Brazilian legend Sergio Mendes, and L.A. native Ben Harper - for this special event. The panel has been created to seek out L.A.'s professional and amateur musical groups of diverse genres to perform during the free ¡Bienvenido Gustavo! musical event.

During the first half of the program, ¡Bienvenido Gustavo! showcases artists from varied genres and generations, featuring young local ensembles, rising stars and established names who have served as role models for the next generation of musicians in their communities. The confirmed line-up features Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez; Andrae Crouch with an all-ages gospel choir; Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) with the Silverlake Conservatory Ensemble; Herbie Hancock with the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Jazz Band; David Hidalgo and Taj Mahal with Los Cenzontles.

These performances are followed by YOLA - The EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, led by Dudamel in his first public appearance with the ensemble, in a performance of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy." YOLA - The EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, the first project of Youth Orchestra LA, makes its Hollywood Bowl debut at this special event. YOLA is the LA Phil's initiative to build, with community partners, youth orchestras in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles. YOLA is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education system that nurtured Gustavo Dudamel. YOLA - The EXPO Center Youth Orchestra began in the fall of 2007, and currently serves over 200 students, ages 7 - 16, each of whom receive free instruments and lessons, and who are committed to playing together as an orchestra.

¡Bienvenido Gustavo! culminates in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, led by Dudamel, featuring the Los Angeles Master Chorale joined by choruses from across Los Angeles, both professional and amateur, representing the great diversity of the city. Soloists to be announced.
