DREAMGIRLS, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL and More Set for DOMA's 2nd All-Musical Season

DOMA Theatre Company has announced its second all-musical season for 2013. Audiences will be able to experience four large-cast, Broadway-style musical productions, including Dreamgirls, Sweet Charity, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, in a personal and intimate setting at Hollywood's MET Theatre.

Opening the season will be Dreamgirls, the Tony, Drama Desk and Grammy Award winner with music by Henry Krieger and book by Tom Eyen that began as a smash Broadway musical, then became an award-winning motion picture. Sizzling with R&B soul, Dreamgirls captures the spirit and hope of Motown when a black girl group from Chicago makes it big in a business controlled by white men. The female trio fights for recognition, fellowship and love as superstardom challenges their musical and cultural identity. DOMA artistic director Marco Gomez directs a cast of 25. (March 1 through April 7)

Next, Richard Israel directs a revival of Sweet Charity, one of the all-time classics of modern musical theater. Meet Charity Hope Valentine, dance hall hostess, eternal optimist and unlucky romantic, as she searches for true love in this Tony award-winning musical comedy that features show-stopping numbers such as "Big Spender," "Rhythm of Life" and "If They Could See Me Now." Based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for Nights of Cabiria, Sweet Charity boasts music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and a book by Neil Simon. (May 17 through June 23)

Summer brings The Scarlet Pimpernel, a high-adventure, Tony-nominated musical based on the original secret identity hero. Set in 1794 during France's "reign of terror," a seemingly foppish British aristocrat takes on the identity of the mysterious Pimpernel who outwits French revolutionaries, rescues fellow countrymen and romances a brave and passionate beauty. A rousing score by Frank Wildhorn (composer of Jekyll & Hyde) and inspiring lyrics by Nan Knighton drive the message that we all have heroism lodged deep within. Prepare to be swept away by the wildly emotional story and swashbuckling action. Directed by Marco Gomez. (August 2 through September 8)

The season closes with the irreverent Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, a comedic Wild West rock musical about America's controversial seventh president that is an audacious mix of historical fact and fiction. Composer Michael Fields and playwright Alex Timbers examine the attraction and terrors of American Populism by redefining Andrew Jackson-the man who invented the Democratic Party, drove the Indians west, and ultimately doubled the size of our nation-as an emo rock star. Named 2010 "Best Musical of the Year" by both The New York Times and Rolling Stone. (October 18 through November 24)

A joint venture between Dolf Ramos and Marco Gomez, DOMA Theatre Company staged five musicals in its first all-musical season in 2012, receiving critical acclaim and selling out productions of The Who's Tommy ("Exhilarating!" - Rock Cellar Magazine), Songs for A New World ("Transformational!" - LA Splash), Jekyll & Hyde:The Musical ("Pick of the Week" - LA Weekly), Xanadu ("Another standout production" - Working Author) and Avenue Q ("Critic's Choice" - Los Angeles Times).

All performances in the 2013 season will take place on Fridays and Saturdays @ 8 pm and Sundays @ 3 pm at The MET Theatre, 1089 N. Oxford Ave. Los Angeles CA 90029. On Tuesday, February 5, DOMA will host a Season Announcement Reception at the Arena Nightclub in Hollywood. The evening will include cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and dessert and will feature select musical performances from each of the four 2013 main stage season productions. Tickets are $75.
