Clarinet Quintets Presented At L.A. Chamber Orchestra IN FOCUS SERIES

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's virtuosic musicians serve as musical tour guides for In Focus, the Orchestra's newest chamber music series curated by Concertmaster Margaret Batjer, which continues with a program of sublime clarinet quintets featuring Principal Clarinet Joshua Ranz on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, 7:30 pm, at Rothenberg Hall, The Huntington in San Marino, and Thursday, April 5, 2018, 7:30 pm, at Moss Theater in Santa Monica.

The program includes Mozart's Clarinet Quintet and Brahms' Clarinet Quintet. In addition to Ranz, other featured LACO artists are Assistant Concertmaster Tereza Stanislav, Violin Cheryl Norman-Brick, Viola Robert Brophy and Principal Cello Andrew Shulman. NPR's Renée Montagne moderates a short discussion at the conclusion of the program. In Focus provides insights into the quintessence of some of the great chamber music repertoire through the lens of LACO's artists in an intimate setting. During LACO's 50th anniversary 2017-18 season, In Focus highlights the remarkable chamber works of Mozart and Brahms.

In Focus concludes May 9 and 10, 2018, with special guest pianist Robert Theis and Principal Oboe Claire Brazeau featured on Mozart's Oboe Quartet, Brahms's Piano Quartet and works by Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann.

Ranz, hailed for his "stunning" artistry (Los Angeles Times), is also principal clarinet of the New West Symphony, has been a member of the Pacific Symphony since 1997 and performs regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He was a member of the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego, California for over 10 seasons and performed as principal at the Oregon Bach Festival and the Martha's Vineyard Chamber Music Festival. He has also appeared with Chamber Music Palisades, Capitol Ensemble, South Bay Chamber Music Society and Jacaranda. Ranz, who has recorded with LACO and the Pacific Symphony, is active in the television and motion picture industry, performing on more than 100 soundtracks for such composers as John Williams, Michael Giacchino, James Horner, Randy Newman, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, Alexander Desplat. He recent films credits include Coco, Lady Bird, Downsizing, A Wrinkle in Time, Star Wars VII and Rogue One, The Incredibles 2 and Ready Player One.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), ranked among the world's top musical ensembles, marks its 50th anniversary in the 2017-18 season. Beloved by audiences and praised by critics, the Orchestra is known as a preeminent interpreter of historical masterworks as well as a champion of contemporary composers. Headquartered in the heart of the country's cultural capital, LACO has been proclaimed "America's finest chamber orchestra" (Public Radio International), "LA's most unintimidating chamber music experience" (Los Angeles Magazine), "resplendent" (Los Angeles Times), and "one of the world's great chamber orchestras"(KUSC Classical FM).
