Chance Theater Presents The Who's TOMMY, 7/2-8/8

By:

The Chance Theater is pleased to announce that it has selected the innovative rock musical The Who's Tommy as its third production of the 2010 season, scheduled to run July 2 through August 8.

Based on The Who's classic 1969 double album rock opera about a "deaf, dumb and blind boy" who becomes the leader of a messianic movement, The Who's Tommy tells the dramatic story of a young boy's journey to manhood through the muted pain of catatonia after witnessing the murder of his mother's lover by his father. Tommy finds his calling as a pinball champion who becomes idolized by the public and the press, but his celebrity machine eventually begins to fall apart.

The musical, which originated at the La Jolla Playhouse in 1992 before playing on Broadway for more than two years, is packed with memorable songs penned by The Who's founder and guitarist, Pete Townsend, including "I'm Free" and "Pinball Wizard." The Who's Tommy won five Tony Awards, including Best Score for Townsend's iconic music.

"The entire company is very excited about presenting The Who's Tommy," said Oanh Nguyen, Chance Theater's Artistic Director. "After the success of last year's production of HAIR, we're bringing the artistic team back to tackle this beast of a musical. The Who's music is the definition of classic rock and remains as vibrant today as when the album was first released in 1969."
