Chance Theater Presents THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA? 9/24-10/24

Chance Theater is pleased to present the Orange County premiere of the Tony, Drama Desk, New York Critics, and Outer Critics Circle Award-Winning black comedy/drama The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? by three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee, September 24 - October 24, 2010.

The play is directed by Marya Mazor, and features Peter Cassone as Martin, Chance Company Member Karen Webster as Stevie, Kevin Tobias as Billy, and Mike Martin as Ross.

The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? is the tale of a married, middle-aged architect who - in the same week that he receives an international prize, wins a lucrative contract, and celebrates his 50th birthday - is forced to confess to his wife and son that he's involved in a love affair that may destroy his life.

The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? premiered on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on March 10, 2002, and won the Tony Award for Best Play, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Broadway Play, and was a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The New York Post stated, "[The Goat ] is unquestionably one of the wittiest and funniest plays Albee has ever written. Truly fascinating... Enthralling!"

"I'm very excited about producing The Goat, or Who is Sylvia, particularly because this will be the first Southern California staging since the Mark Taper Forum presented the play in 2005," says Managing Director Casey Long. "Albee is a prolific and thought-provoking playwright who specializes in exploring the humorous, quirky and often dark side of human relationships. This play in particular focuses on the limits of a liberal society and challenges audience members to question their own morality in the face of social taboos."

Edward Albee's plays include Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Zoo Story, A Delicate Balance and Three Tall Women. His works are considered well-crafted, often unsympathetic, examinations of the modern condition. His early works reflect a mastery and Americanization of the Theatre of the Absurd that found its peak in works by European playwrights such as Jean Genet, Samuel Beckett, and Eugène Ionesco. Younger American Playwrights, such as Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel, credit Albee's daring mix of theatricality and biting dialogue with helping to reinvent the post-war American theatre in the early 1960s.

A member of the Dramatists Guild Council, Albee has received three Pulitzer Prizes for drama-for A Delicate Balance (1967), Seascape (1975), and Three Tall Women (1994). He was also awarded a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement (2005), the Gold Medal in Drama from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters (1980), as well as the Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts (both in 1996).
