Center Theatre Group to Offer Free Workshops at The Shop

By:

Center Theatre Group will provide free workshops to community members at The Shop located at 2856 E. 11th Street in Boyle Heights, 90023.

Center Theatre Group staff will teach crafting techniques with activities that range from puppet making to fabric marbling. Upcoming workshops are taking place in May and June.

The upcoming workshops are as follows:

- May 27 - Shibori: Teaching the ancient Japanese art of shibori. Shibori is the folding, gathering, pleating and binding of cloth, which is then dipped in dye to create unique patterns.

- June 3 - Fabric marbling: Create a colorful silk piece using paint and household tools.

- June 17 - Puppet making: Learn to craft puppets out of household items.

- June 24 - Kaleidoscope making: Make homemade kaleidoscopes, optical instruments that create a colorful, symmetrical pattern when rotated.

All workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are bilingual in English and Spanish. The workshops are suitable for ages 15 and up. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

Due to the complexities of certain activities, each workshop will have a specific limit on how many can attend. To learn what workshops are still available and reserve a spot, please contact Jesus A. Reyes at jreyes@CTGLA.org or call (213) 972-8028.

Center Theatre Group began its community programming at The Shop in the fall of 2013 with a pilot series of workshops and events that offered opportunities for Boyle Heights residents to express creativity, build community and connect the craft of theatre with their daily lives.

The workshops are part of Center Theatre Group's Education and Community Partnerships department. Currently one of the most active theatre education programs in the country, Education and Community Partnerships reached more than 18,000 students, teachers and community members throughout Southern California in the 2015-2016 season. The department is dedicated to the development of artists, educators, community members and young people's skills and creativity through the exploration of theatre, its literature, art and imagination.

Center Theatre Group, one of the nation's preeminent arts and cultural organizations, is Los Angeles' leading nonprofit theatre company, programming seasons at the 736-seat Mark Taper Forum and 1600 to 2000-seat Ahmanson Theatre at The Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles, and the 317-seat Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. In addition to presenting and producing the broadest range of theatrical entertainment in the country, Center Theatre Group is one of the nation's leading producers of ambitious new works through commissions and world premiere productions and a leader in interactive community engagement and education programs that reach across generations, demographics and circumstance to serve Los Angeles.
