Thomas Ince was spotted making one of his Western movies along Ballona Creek when Harry Culver's vision for his city came into focus. Culver then enticed the moviemaker to move to Culver City. Culver set the scene for the story of an emerging community, halfway between The City of Angels and Abbot Kinney's resort of Venice, where three major movie studios and support services became the first economic base by the time the city was only five years old! - "Culver City, California: The First Hundred Years," by Julie Lugo Cerra

100 years has passed and Culver City continues to establish itself as fertile ground for the arts.

The 1988 event series celebrates the 1988 adoption of the Art in Public Places Program Ordinance. 1988 features four site-specific dance performances by Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, which center on six featured artworks from Culver City's public art collection. The events highlight the public art program and the performing arts as primary components of the ordinance. Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre will join former Cultural Affairs Commissioner, Marla Koosed, who worked closely on the most recent ordinance, to toast Culver City's Centennial and present 1988 with performances throughout 2017. Each performance will take place on and around existing pieces of public art.

Culver City's Art in Public Places Program comprises approximately 100 individual permanent artworks. 1988 will transform six of these public artworks into performance spaces:

  • Cloud at Access Culver City - April 23, 2017, performances at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm
  • Punctuation Station at Westfield Culver City - May 7, 2017, performance at 5:30-7pm
  • Technicolor Drip - August 6, 2017, 12 minute performances between1-3pm; screening of performance 8-9pm at Helms Bakery District
  • Hanging Garden, Quotation Courtyard & Panoramic, and La Ballona at Culver City Hall - September 9, 2017, performances at 5pm, and 7pm
