CALEXICO Performs at Hollywood Bowl September 18
Arizona roots-rockers Calexico debut at the Hollywood Bowl (2301 North Highland Ave) for ¡Viva Mexico!, a special concert on the KCRW World Festival series that celebrates the bicentennial of Mexico's independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution on September 18 at 8pm. Tickets priced $12-$102 are on sale at HollywoodBowl.com, at the Hollywood Bowl Box Office (12pm - 6pm, Tues. - Sun.); via credit card phone order at 323.850.2000, or through Ticketmaster.
Calexico will feature mariachi and Spanish-language singing for this show in honor of these anniversaries. Influenced by the border town from which they take their name, Calexico's musical style is a blend of traditional Latin sounds of mariachi/conjunto/cumbia/Tejano music and Southwestern United States country music, as well as '50s-'60s jazz and '90s-'00s post-rock. Calexico built their profile by touring as support acts for bands such as Pavement, the Dirty Three and Lambchop, and regularly playing festivals such as the Bonnaroo Music Festival, the Hurricane Festival and All Tomorrow's Parties. Their music has been chosen for a variety of projects, from Michael Mann's film Collateral, to background music on PRI's This American Life. Rarely without an invitation to perform, Calexico is currently scheduled to appear in festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada.
