Diverse Schedule of Italian Language Classes Set for Historic Garibaldi-Meucci Museum

Staten Island's Italian historic landmark, the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, is again offering a diverse schedule of Italian language classes, beginning the week of January 26. Registration begins January 4. This semester, four different instructors will be teaching evening and weekend classes, for beginners through advanced students, to accomodate almost everyone's busy schedule. Most classes in our 15-week semester will begin in the end of January, with 3 classes beginning in the end of February.Tuition remains $150 for non-members and $135 for members for the 15-week semester. To defray administrative costs we have had to add a $15 registration fee, however, including the registration fee, each 90-minute session costs only $11 for non-members, and $10 for members.

Beginning in the end of January, on Saturdays and Sundays, Professor Louis Leonini will be teaching beginner through advanced courses: "Introduction to Italian Language, History and Culture," Parts I & II and "Journey Through Italian Language, History and Culture." On Tuesday and Thursday evenings Marinetta Paone will be teaching "Italian II," "Italian III" and "Intermediate Conversation Through Literature" to students with some background in Italian. Tuesday afternoons Rose Frisari will offer "Italian for Beginners, Part II," for those who took her Part I class in the fall.
Beginning in the end of February, Maria Bonavita will offer "Communicative Italian I" and "Italian Theater &?Literature" on Mondays evenings and "Communicative Italian II" on Wednesday evenings.

The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum was the home of Antonio Meucci, the true inventor of the telephone, and a refuge to Giuseppe Garibaldi, the legendary hero who championed the unification of Italy. For over 50 years the museum has fulfilled its mission to preserve the legacies of these great men, and to promote understanding of the Italian-American heritage through cultural, artistic and educational programs and classes.

Regular museum hours are 1 p.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is $5 per person, members and children under 10 are free. Call ahead for groups of 10 or more. The first floor of the museum is wheelchair accessible, but the restroom is on the second floor. At press time, program funding has been provided through the Order Sons of Italy in America; by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council; the Office of the Staten Island Borough President, Richmond County Savings Foundation; Northfield Bank Foundation, and by grants allocated by New York State Senator Diane Savino and New York City Council members Vincent Ignizio and James Oddo.
