Bare Bones Theater Co. presents "Betty's Summer Vacation," Christopher Durang's black comedy, at 8:00 p.m. on October 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, and November 3, 4, 5, with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on November 6.
Playwright Durang comments on the tabloid-ization of American culture-how human nature's interest in horror and gossip, along with TV shows that thrive on gory details and outrageous crimes, resulted in a public that regards tragedy and disgusting behavior as a fascinating kind of entertainment. Betty is looking forward to a relaxing vacation at the oceanside. Unfortunately, her housemates include a chatterbox, a pushy landlady, a sex-addicted hunk, and a shy, young man who just might be a serial killer. Voices from the ceiling add a unique household feature. Betty has one vacation she'll never forget. Rape, dismemberment and murder figure in the play, which manages to remain a comedy in spite of it all.
"Betty's Summer Vacation" won a Best Play Obie award in 1999. For mature audiences.
Bare Bones Theater, 57 Main St., Northport. Tickets are $25, $20 matinees, at www.barebonestheater.com or 800-838-3006. Info only: 631-606-0026.
