BWW Reviews: Theatre Three's A CHRISTMAS CAROL

By:

The show is wonderful to begin with.

Theatre Three's annual production of Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol has become a beautiful tradition within the Long Island theatre community. Even with slight changes over the years, the timeless tale is as stunning as ever.

Jeffrey Sanzel, Artistic Director of the Port Jefferson venue, directs the show - now in its 31st year - running through December 27th. Mr. Sanzel also stars as our favorite miserable miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. As we know, the story takes place over three days at Christmas as three spirits visit Scrooge to save his immortal soul. Mr. Sanzel's take as they go from Scrooge's youthful past to becoming a crotchety, greedy businessman to ultimately finding the Christmas spirit is really the best around.

Mr. Sanzel leads an extraordinary, large cast filled with Theatre Three vets many of whom hold several roles. Indeed, each has their moment to shine.

Another highlight is the stunning costumes done by Randall Parsons and Bonnie Vidal. The most elaborate is donned by James D. Schultz as The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. While Mr. Schultz is one who has several roles, James does an excellent job operating this costume. Yes, I said operated. The faceless undertaker-like ghost stands almost to the top of the stage, literally. As he maneuvered back and forth, fog and lighting surrounded the stage and his arms open abruptly to the sound of thunder as he was taking Scrooge into his future.

Additionally, Mr. Parsons set is well done. The large stage has concealed sections and rolling props that are enhanced by Robert W. Henderson, Jr's atmospheric lighting.

And so, if you haven't seen this incarnation of A Christmas Carol in a while - or if you haven't seen at all - go see it. The classic story and this superb cast will surely get you into the Christmas spirit.

A Christmas Carol is presented by Theatre Three of Port Jefferson, Long Island through December 29th. By Charles Dickens, Adapted and Directed by Jeffrey Sanzel, Music and Sound Effects by Ellen Michelmore, Musical Direction by Jack Kohl, Scenic Design by Randall Parsons, Costume Design by Randall Parsons and Bonnie Vidal, Lighting Design by Robert W.
