Charlotte Street Foundation Presents Deanna Dikeman Artist Talk 11/7

On Monday, November 7, 6pm, Kansas City based photographer Deanna Dikeman will present an artist talk at la Esquina, 1000 W. 25 St. KCMO, about her experience at Art Omi International Artists Residency program in Upstate New York, which she attended this summer through a partnership between Art Omi and Charlotte Street Foundation. Dikeman will speak about her work and experience at Art Omi and the impact of the residency on her art, career, and creative process.

Each year, Charlotte Street sponsors one past Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award recipient at Art Omi. The International Artists Residency is a three week residency program for visual artists from around the world, which provides artists with a studio, living quarters and meals. The Residency combines uninterrupted time to create with a stimulating atmosphere of exchange, where experimentation, discourse and collaboration are encouraged. Each year, a different critic-in-residence lives on campus with the artists, leading discussions and making one-on-one studio visits. Because of the proximity to New York City, residents are also visited by many prominent critics, gallerists, curators, and artists who travel to Art Omi. The residency culminates with an Open Studios day open to the general public.

Of her time at Art Omi, Dikeman says: "Art Omi was an intense experience of productive art making, friend making, and exposure to new ideas about art that still have me thinking." While at Art Omi, Dikeman created a series of photographs of clothes at a thrift store in Hudson, New York. An exhibition of these images will be on view at Truman State University Art Gallery, Kirksville, MO, October 17-November 16, 2011.

Fellow Art Omi attendees included artists from Italy, India, Mauritius, Poland, Israel, South Korea, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iran, Sri Lanka, the Phillipines, Japan, Burma, Australia and New Zealand. This year's Critic-in-Residence was Sara Reisman, Director of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs' Percent for Art Program.

Dikeman is a photographer who lives and works in both Columbia and Kansas City, Missouri. Her photographs of her parents and family in Iowa and Nebraska explore themes of daily routines and quiet habits. Her series of domestic interiors allude to human activity and her most recent work explores the fabric and costuming associated with ballroom dancing, capturing the swing and drape of the movements of clothing in motion.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, USA, in 1954, Deanna Dikeman has been an artist-photographer since 1985. Her work is in the Permanent Collections of The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, Illinois; The Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City, Missouri; The Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona; and The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, Kansas. Deanna received the 2008 United States Artists Booth Fellowship, a Charlotte Street Foundation Fellowship in 2006, and the Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer's Fellowship in 1996.

Dikeman's work has received national critical reviews in the Kansas City Star, Columbia Daily Tribune, and Review Magazine.
