Review: FORBIDDEN BROADWAY at Starlight Theatre KC

If you're in need of a good belly laugh that only high comedy can deliver you won't want to miss the latest incarnation of "Forbidden Broadway", now showing at the Starlight (indoor) Theatre in Kansas City. This hilarious romp through Broadway's most popular musical theatre numbers is fun from beginning to end. There are parody's from Book of Mormon, Mary Poppins, Chicago, Les Miserables, Wicked, Hamilton, and Frozen (just to name a few). The irreverent jousting at such famous stars as Idina Menzel, Sarah Brightman, Ethel Merman, and Robert Goulet is vocally spot on and teasingly delicious.

Review: FORBIDDEN BROADWAY at Starlight Theatre KC A cast of four, lead by a perfectly timed Musical Director - Catherine Stornetta, hits the stage running and never lets up. Valerie Fagan, a KC and UMKC Alum, returns from a long list of Broadway and National touring shows to a home town crowd eager to see what she's been up to. She delivers a performance, that while funny as can be, truly shows she has the chops to sing most anything. Kevin B McGlynn takes on some tough tenor numbers with seemingly effortless ease. His take on Phantom of the Opera had the audience practically rolling in the aisles. Jeanne Montano (a 10 year Forbidden Broadway veteran) was as stellar as playing Frankie Valli as she was Velma from Chicago. Matthew Weeden rounds out the cast and bares all (sometimes almost all) with major melodrama. The four work together so well with such perfect timing, choreography, and quick costume changes it truly seems like there must be more than four actors on stage. Whether you are up on your Broadway show tunes, or not, there is something to tickle everyone in this show.
