Theater Lighting Technician - Miami New Drama

The Theater Lighting Technician is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of lighting equipment in a theatrical production or performance space. The primary focus is on ensuring that the lighting design complements the overall artistic vision of the production and enhances the audience's experience. This role involves working closely with the lighting designer, stage manager, and other technical staff to achieve seamless and impactful lighting effects during live performances.





Job Responsibilities:





Lighting Setup: Install and set up lighting fixtures, control consoles, dimmers, and other related equipment according to the lighting designer's specifications and the production's needs.

Lighting Operation: Operate lighting equipment during rehearsals and performances, making timely adjustments as required to match the director's vision and the artistic goals of the production.

Lighting Design Implementation: Collaborate with the lighting designer to translate their artistic concepts into practical lighting designs, ensuring proper cueing and execution during shows.

Maintenance: Regularly inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain lighting equipment to ensure it functions properly and safely. Replace faulty or worn-out components when necessary.

Rigging and Safety: Safely rig lighting fixtures and other equipment in overhead grids or on portable structures, adhering to industry safety standards and regulations.

Communication: Maintain effective communication with the lighting designer, stage manager, and other technical crew members to ensure seamless coordination during performances.





Rehearsals and Technical Rehearsals: Attend rehearsals and technical rehearsals to familiarize yourself with the production's lighting cues and requirements, making necessary adjustments based on feedback.

Equipment Inventory: Keep track of lighting equipment inventory, report any shortages, and assist with the procurement of new equipment when needed.





Requirements:

Technical Skills: Possess a strong understanding of lighting equipment, including conventional and automated lighting fixtures, control consoles, dimmers, DMX and related accessories.

Experience: Previous experience working as a theater lighting technician is highly desirable. Hands-on experience with lighting setup, operation, and maintenance is valuable.

Creativity: Demonstrate a creative and artistic flair, as the role involves implementing the lighting designer's concepts and contributing ideas to enhance the overall lighting design.

Collaboration: Work well as part of a team and communicate effectively with other theater staff members, including directors, designers, stagehands, and actors.

Problem-Solving: Exhibit strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot technical issues quickly and effectively during live performances.

Safety Awareness: Prioritize safety and adhere to safety guidelines and protocols related to lighting equipment and rigging.

Physical Stamina: The job may involve long hours, lifting heavy equipment, and working at heights. Physical fitness and stamina are essential.

Flexibility: Be adaptable and able to handle last-minute changes or unforeseen challenges during the production process.

Technical Knowledge: Stay up-to-date with advancements in theater lighting technology and techniques.

Education: While a formal degree is not always required, a background in technical theater, lighting design, or related fields can be advantageous.
