TD/Carpenter - Part Time

Stella Adler Studio of Acting seeks a part-time TD/Carpenter - to begin January 2023 Salary:

$850/week

8-week unpaid furlough each summer Overview:

At the Stella Adler Studio of Acting we produce upwards of 30 small theatrical productions in our black box theaters each year as part of the curriculum for our student actors. We hire freelance directors and designers to work on these shows (usually multiple shows running in rep). The TD/Carpenter is responsible for helping the designers get their designs into our time/space/budget scope, and then get the set onstage! This could entail building custom scenic pieces as well as utilizing our existing stock of materials. The TD/Carpenter uses the help of our student actors as well as a small amount of outside labor to make this happen.

This job is as much about building things as it is about keeping the needs of many shows organized. Specific Responsibilities:

Working with scenic designers to create and execute a plan for scenery

Sourcing and purchasing materials

Maintaining a high level of safety in the studios and work areas

Collaborating with other members of the production department and helping in all areas to ensure successful productions

Managing budgets and expense reports and finding solutions for designers to stay within budget

Working on multiple shows at once (up to 6 shows may be running concurrently)

Overseeing student-actor help with building and painting scenic elements

Hiring and supervising additional labor as needed

Supervising Techs, Dresses, and Performances - This will entail being on-site for evenings and weekends a fair amount.

Maintaining a clean and organized shop, as well as building and maintaining stock materials like flats and risers/platforms

Keeping performance spaces in clean working condition at all times

Maintaining a positive working environment and upholding the studio’s mission What we’re looking for:

-Strong communication and organization skills

- Ability to build scenery and use tools safely

- Confidence working alone and being self-motivated

- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs, climb ladders and stairs
