In search of strong actor/performers for upcoming and future developmental readings of a new musical "Learning to Fly" Learning To Fly Music/Lyrics: Joseph Colaneri Book/Lyrics: Jacqueline Hennessy Developmental Reading: Wednesday August 6th @ 6pm in NYC (location TBD) Prospect for future readings and workshops CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: Anthony: (male presenting, mid-late twenties) A man of heart but buried in fear. Anthony is a closeted homosexual who at the beginning of the piece lives in an abrasive & depressive manner but as the show goes on, the love he discovers makes him alive again. Bari-tenor Luke: (male presenting, early twenties) The epitome of a living saint. He helps any and all who are in need. Big heart and bigger dreams. He is a charming queer man who lives fearlessly for his time. Strong and expressive dancer. Tenor Lucille: (female presenting, mid twenties) Lucille is Anthony’s wife. She is sweet, sunny and dedicated to her duties as a wife. Lucille’s journey in the show must show her descent into catatonic madness as she feels the pressures of society weigh down on her for not being a “good wife”. Soprano with a strong mix. Jesse: (POC, gender fluid, late thirties) Jesse is a powerful and commanding pansy performer at a club in Harlem. Jesse is bold, beautiful, and strong sometimes to the point of abrasiveness in their humor. The underbelly of Jesse however, is a softer and more maternal one. They are very protective of Luke and given their history with Anthony and other married men like him. Tenor/Alto Elsie: (female presenting, late twenties-early thirties) Commanding leader of the ladies of society. She’s bold and sarcastic all within the bounds of polite society. She’s nosy and loves gossip. Mezzo-Soprano The Society (Ensemble): The Society is the personification of 1930’s society and all the judgment and watching eyes that comes with it. They will play several featured roles including members of the ladies of society club. Specific characters include: Margaret, (30’s) a kindly woman who owns the Ladies Tea Shoppe who was cast out of the Ladies Society Club for adultery, Jimmy, (30’s) a trans man who helps run the jazz club.
