Casting Call for A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story at The Public Theater of San Antonio - The Public Theatre

LISTING INFORMATION

The Public Theater of San Antonio in collaboration with Stage Hands is currently seeking Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing actors of all ages and ethnicities to submit for our upcoming production of A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story.

 

Actors local to the San Antonio, Texas area and actors that are fluent in American Sign Language are encouraged to submit.

 

Roles may be cast with various communication styles to ensure inclusivity for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. These may include:

 

  • ASL Shadow Performers: Some roles may be portrayed by actors speaking with ASL shadow performers, enhancing the visual experience for our audience.
  • Bilingual Actors: Other roles may involve actors who can both speak and sign, providing a seamless communication experience for all.
  • Deaf/Hard of Hearing Actors: We aim to cast Deaf or Hard of Hearing actors who sign, accompanied by a spoken translator to make the performance accessible to a hearing audience.

Experience Charles Dickens’s timeless story, A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas, in a truly unique and enchanting way with spoken word and American Sign Language (ASL) shadow performances. Watch in awe as the characters come to life through the graceful movements of ASL interpreters casting stunning shadows that capture the essence of Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation. This innovative adaptation brings a fresh perspective to the beloved holiday tale, offering a visual and emotional feast for all audiences, including the Deaf and hard of hearing. Join us for a magical journey of redemption and goodwill as we celebrate the spirit of Christmas through the beauty of ASL shadow theatre, ensuring a holiday season you'll never forget.


 

INSTRUCTIONS

In-person auditions: Friday, September 29, 2023 at 6:30pm

Virtual auditions are open now!

Deadline to submit virtually: October 4, 2023

 

PLEASE NOTE: If you are a non-signing actor who initially submitted audition materials for Season 23-24, you may choose to utilize your original submission instead of re-submitting. Thank you for your patience. Please fill out the top section of the form and select the option: "I would like to utilize my Season 23-24 Audition submission."  

Please film your audition in front of a clean/well-lit background.

If you are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, please submit a video signing “Deck the Halls.”

If you are hearing, please submit a video singing a Christmas carol of your choice (acapella or with a track) as well as perform a 1 minute monologue. 

If you are hearing and can sign, please submit a video singing and signing a Christmas carol of your choice (acapella or with a track) as well as perform and sign a 1 minute monologue.

If you are attending the in-person audition. Please prepare the same materials as above. A piano accompanist and Bluetooth speaker will be provided. 

Actors who are not familiar with ASL will be coached during rehearsals.
