Assistant Lighting Supervisor

THE PUBLIC THEATER is seeking a collaborative and creative supervisor to join our Lighting Department. The Public’s wide breadth of programming includes an annual season of new work in six venues including Free Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The Lighting Department is committed to providing our designers, our colleagues, and each other the best possible environment in which to create this work.



The Public Theater seeks an Assistant Lighting Supervisor responsible for coordinating and executing lighting plans for assigned projects including mainstage productions at The Public’s 425 Lafayette Street theater complex as well as Free Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Assistant Lighting Supervisors find innovative and creative ways of managing resources to turn our designers’ visions into reality.



Key Accountabilities:

•Coordinate with the Lighting Supervisor, designers, and other departments to advance lighting plots

•Act as Production Electrician for assigned shows

•Supervise show Head Electrician teams to prep, hang, and focus lighting equipment

•Manage budgets for labor and materials on assigned projects

•Research, prepare, and implement practical projects for shows on varying scales

•Work with other production departments to facilitate efficient load-ins

•Help to recruit and train overhire labor, including providing feedback

•Obtain quotes for and purchase equipment and materials

•Maintain and inventory equipment

•Work to improve department processes and procedures

•Promote and enforce safe workmanship and working conditions

•Work on special projects as assigned



Qualifications:

•Experience in Head Electrician roles on large-scale productions, or similar

•Proficiency in Word, Excel, Lightwright, and Vectorworks

•Understanding of basic lighting programming and show networking, especially ETC systems

•Knowledge of basic theater rigging and modern lighting equipment

•Strong supervisory skills, organization, and attention to detail

•Adept communication and customer service competencies

•Ability to maintain a kind demeanor under pressure in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines

•Longer weeks and days plus evening and weekend hours required during tech and previews for assigned projects



Compensation and Employment Dates:

•This position would ideally start ASAP.

•This is an exempt position according to the Fair Labor Standards Act, with a salary range of $60-$65k.





COVID-19 and Vaccination Policy:

•As a condition of employment, The Public will require all who report to work on site (either at The Public Theater or any other workspace or performing location) to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and booster series

•The Public Theater Production Department is currently engaged in a combination of remote and in-person work. This position will work be working in-person.
