Love triumphant
Julius Caesar in Egypt
Handel 1724
Experience all the colour, drama, passion and epic sweep of a Hollywood blockbuster in this new production of Handel’s great masterpiece.
Egypt, ancient times. Cleopatra uses all her considerable wiles to persuade Caesar to join her in an alliance against her brutish brother Ptolemy, with whom she rules the country. Plots and counter-plots ensue before Caesar and Cleopatra emerge finally triumphant in both love and war.
In eight grand da capo arias, Handel illustrates the entire spectrum of human feelings from thoughtless coquettishness to passionate love born by the deepest emotions.
Written at the height of his success, the sumptuous music is full of sensuality and gracefulness - most admired for its brilliant characterisation and power, especially in his lavish music for the role of the legendary beauty, Cleopatra.
Conductor - ROBERT HOWARTH
Director - TIM ALBERY
Set & Costume Designer - LESLIE TRAVERS
Lighting Designer - THOMAS HASE
Sung in Italian with English titles.

GIULIO CESARE Will Be Performed at the New National Theatre in October
Expectations were high on all sides when Artistic Director of Opera, ONO Kazushi, scheduled Giulio Cesare as the first production in our baroque opera series. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic put rehearsals and performances on hold. After two and a half years of anticipation, the New National Theatre are now finally able to bring this magnificent baroque opera to the Opera Palace.
