George Bizet, the composer of Carmen, the most popular opera of all time, was a child prodigy. Born in Paris, his mother was a gifted pianist and his father a voice teacher. Small wonder, then, that the young Bizet knew dozens of songs by heart, simply because he heard his father’s students singing all day long. At the age of four, he could already read and write music and play the piano. He was accepted into the Conservatoire de Paris at the age of nine, and by the time he turned 20 he had won every single one of its prizes.
