The Bridge Production Group has just announced the second of their "New Works Readings and Saturday Sessions" - the developmental core of The Bridge Residency at the Robert Moss Theatre.

The Bridge Residency will present a staged reading of Sydney Blake's SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, JOHN: A play about the Pilgrims on October 9th at 6 PM!

Admission is free and audiences are encouraged to come hear this new work as it is presented to the public for the first time! As with all productions occurring as part of The Bridge Residency, SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, JOHN: A play about the Pilgrims will be presented at the Robert Moss Theatre in Astor Place (440 Lafayette, 3rd Floor).

SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, JOHN: A play about Pilgrims / written and directed by Sydney Blake

John Alden, a carpenter on the Mayflower, and Priscilla Mullins, a pilgrim, have nothing in common except the hope that they will safely reach the New World. The trials and tribulations of the voyage mirror those of John's courtship with Priscilla. A humorous, unconventional treatment of America's origin story.

When Sydney Blake gave birth to her daughter, she received a surprising gift: her husband's family tree, going back to the Mayflower. If John Alden and Priscilla Mullins had not met on that fateful voyage, Sydney's husband and daughter would not exist--not to mention a million other descendants, including President John Adams. Longfellow wrote a poem called THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH, in which Standish is too shy to ask Priscilla to marry him, so he asks John to do it for him. Priscilla's answer to the proposal is, "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" This actually never happened. SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, JOHN: A play about the Pilgrims is a story about what most likely happened between these two iconic pilgrims.
