Phoenix Theatre of Indianapolis embraces the Halloween spirit in a partnership with local mystery author Madalyn S. Kinsey. Kinsey will be on site at the theatre October 27-30, selling signed copies of her works throughout the opening weekend of Static, a haunting World Premiere by Phoenix playwright-in-residence Tom Horan.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Madalyn S. Kinsey was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has lived and worked as a corporate attorney in Indianapolis, Chicago, and San Francisco. Searching for inspiration for her writing, she called upon fond memories of frequent childhood visits with cousins on the family farm near Fishers, Indiana, where abandoned buildings, a Civil War-era graveyard only steps from the house (rumored to be haunted by a Civil War soldier), a mysterious creek running through the property, and a nearby municipal airport, made her real-life visits fascinating and full of adventure. Those memories have inspired the plots of her Vanessa Mysteries series, the first of which was The Ghost of Cheeney Creek, and its sequel, The Mystery of Gatewood Airport. In each book, her main character, 14-year old Vanessa, and her cousins and their friend, Jim, are swept into new and different adventures requiring courage and commitment to friendship and family. When not writing, Madalyn practices corporate law with an Indianapolis law firm, and enjoys classic movies and TV, ghost hunting, travel, and flying.

ABOUT THE PLAY
20 years after Walter and Millie have passed away, a young woman named Emma moves into their abandoned home. When she discovers Walter's tape recorder, she can't help but be drawn in by its strange collection of memories. The longer she stays in the house, the more consumed she becomes by the need to understand the couple's secrets... the key to which lies in a single missing tape-and Emma will stop at nothing to find it. This world premiere of Playwright-in-Residence Tom Horan's newest work will find you guessing, hoping, and deeply moved.

THE PLAYWRIGHT

Tom Horan is a writer and Sound Designer who serves as the Playwright-in-Residence at the Phoenix. His works have been honored with several awards, including Best-of-Fest at the Austin FronteraFest for The King and the Clockmaker, and two Austin Table Critics Awards for The Poison Squad. Static will be his fourth premiere at the Phoenix; previous productions include last season's Acid Dolphin Experiment and Leyenda, and Typhoid Mary before that. Elsewhere, Static was workshopped this summer at the Source Festival in Washington D.C. He recently joined the faculty of the Ball State Theatre Department.
