Fort Wayne Civic Theater Holds Musical Auditions For THE PRODUCERS 5/17

Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Producers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night.

The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime For Hitler"), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends.

Auditions will be held at the Arts United Center (formerly the Performing Arts Center) at 303 East Main Street.

Enter from the rear of the building, using the glass doors to the Green Room. Please arrive early to check in and fill out an audition form.

Rehearsals: June 8-July 24, 2009; Mondays-Fridays, 7:00-10:00pm; If needed, Sundays, 2-6:00pm

Performances: Sat., July 25-Aug. 9, 2009; Thurs @ 7:30pm, Fri & Sat @ 8:00pm, Sat & Sun @ 2:00pm

 

Audition Requirements

It is very important that we have a list of ALL CONFLICTS at the time of the audition.

We are seeking strong singers/actors/dancers. Prepare and memorize one verse of an up-tempo song or ballad which shows off your voice, range, and personality. Standard Broadway show tunes are best. Be sure to bring sheet music (not just lyrics but actual piano music) in the correct key - do not expect the pianist to transpose your music on sight. Have all cuts or repetitions clearly marked. Place your music in a binder or tape the sheets together for the benefit of the accompanist. Pianist is provided. Plan to wear appropriate clothing (dance attire or sweat pants & sneakers or jazz shoes) for the dance portion of the audition, which will be taught on site.

NEEDED: Cast of 40- 42, 16 MEN & 16 WOMEN plus additional roles, AGES 16 & UP. We encourage actors of all ethnicities to audition.

Max Bialystock - a portly man in his fifties, a greedy, conniving Broadway Theatrical Producer (baritone)
Leo Bloom - a meek-mannered accountant in his mid-thirties (high baritone)
Franz Liebkin-a wild-eyed German immigrant, pigeon caretaker turned actor/playwright (high baritone)
Roger DeBris - a theatrical director who is flamboyantly gay (high baritone)
Carmen Ghia - a thin, strange looking man, Roger DeBris assistant (tenor)
Ulla Inga Hansen Bensen Yonsen Tallen-Hallen Svaden-Svanson-Max's sexy Swedish Secretary

(mezzo soprano w/ belt)
Additional Roles - (Most chorus members must tap, dance and play other characters) singing, dancing ensemble; Bum, Bag Lady, Nuns, Street Cleaner, Mr. Marks, Jack, Donald, Jason, Ticket Taker, Gunter, Stalin, Churchill, Guard, Judge, Jury Foreman, Prison Trustee, Usherettes, First Nighters, Workmen, Little Old Ladies, Accountants, Chorus Girls, Pigeons, Roger's Team, Heilos, Stormtroopers, Cops, Convicts, and Girl Prisoners.
