Trebuchet Players Present HAMLET at Obsidian Art Space, Now thru 12/14
Trebuchet Players will perform William Shakespeare's most enduring tragedy today, November 29-December 14 at Obsidian Art Space, 3522 White Oak Blvd., in the Heights.
Hamlet epitomizes canonical drama. It is a play revered for both its structural and thematic brilliance, its intellectual and emotional power. The action of Hamlet revolves around the Hamlet-Claudius axis, the conflict that sustains and propels the plot. The plot conveys the central premise, "To thine own self be true." Trebuchet's production focuses on the destructive capacity of deception, of proverbially rotten substance beneath glittering exteriors.
To facilitate this vision, director Kathy Drum has chosen to present Hamlet in a "Steampunk Sideshow" aesthetic. Shakespeare's characters are assumed by Vaudevillian actors during the Gilded Age as a sort of penance for the actors' failure to exhibit self-knowledge and self-fidelity. Having been untrue to themselves, it is their fate to perform the narrative of Hamlet in perpetuity.
Trebuchet debuted as a theatre company in 2012 with another Shakespearean production, Troilus and Cressida, at Super Happy Fun Land, featuring an original score composed and performed by members of Houston band Knights of the Fire Kingdom.
