PSC Founder and Artistic Director Guy Roberts has received the first inaugural Sidney Berger Award from the Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA). The "Sidney" Award was announced and presented by STA President Jeffrey Watkins on January 25, 2014 at the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario at the annual STA conference. Sidney Berger was the founder of the Houston Shakespeare Festival and longtime Chairman of the Drama Department at the University of Houston.

Endowed and created by Sandra Berger and the Berger Estate, the Sidney Berger Award celebrates mid-career Artistic Directors of Shakespeare Theatres throughout the world and honors the legacy of Sidney Berger, founder of the Houston Shakespeare Festival and co-founder of the Shakespeare Theatre Association.

Sandra Berger says, "People were suggesting various ways to memorialize Sidney and still are. But it seemed to me that I wanted to honor all the things he was and loved. I wanted to create an award given to someone who embodied many of those same gifts - a lover of Shakespeare, an accomplished actor and director, artistic director and producer, an innovator and charismatic leader. As I listed these attributes it dawned on me I knew another such person: Guy Roberts." [full press release attached]

Guy Roberts can next be seen on stage in Houston in his production of Macbeth, playing at Main Street Theater, Feb. 26 - Mar. 9.
