LBJ to Return to the Alley Theatre in THE GREAT SOCIETY This Season

The Alley Theatre announces Robert Schenkkan's THE GREAT SOCIETY as a part of the 71st season, bringing the iconic figure - President Lyndon Baines Johnson- back to the Alley stage.

The Alley once again collaborates with the Dallas Theater Center, co-producing the new LBJ play THE GREAT SOCIETY, which depicts LBJ's tragic fall from grace. The play is by Texas playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Schenkkan.

Last season, the Alley co-produced with the Dallas Theater Center, Schenkkan's Tony Award-winning play ALL THE WAY which dramatized the tumultuous first year of LBJ's presidency.

THE GREAT SOCIETY continues with the years from 1965 to 1968, as LBJ struggles to fight a "war on poverty" even as his war in Vietnam spins out of control. Besieged by political opponents, Johnson marshals all his political wiles to try to pass some of the most important social programs in U.S. history, while the country descends into chaos over the war and backlash against civil rights. THE GREAT SOCIETY debuted at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival in July of 2014.

The Alley Theatre's full 2017-2018 season will be announced in the Spring; however, current Alley subscribers may renew subscriptions now. Five and 8 play subscription packages, which includes Robert Schenkkan's THE GREAT SOCIETY, will be available April 2017.

THE GREAT SOCIETY is recommended for ages 13 + due to mature language.

THE GREAT SOCIETY opens January 26, 2018 in the Hubbard Theatre and continues through February 18, 2018.
