BCT Presents SOUTH PACIFIC, Now thru 3/29

By:

Bayou City Theatrics delivers yet another theatrical work that has stood the test of time, with a unique approach to one of Broadway's most cherished musicals. The 2015 Spring Season continues with the treasured work of composer, Richard Rodgers, and his colleague, lyricist and writer, Oscar Hammerstein II, assisted by book contributions from Joshua Logan. South Pacific is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Tales of the South Pacific. This production runs tonight, March 13 through March 29 at The Kaleidoscope.

The musical hit the Broadway stage in 1949, and revolutionized the current trend of its defined predecessors. Honoring its innovation and following in the groundbreaking style in which it was originally presented, the Bayou City Theatrics creative team takes an unsuspected yet universal turn in their translation of this celebrated musical. Their production focuses on the poignant themes that still remain significant in today's culture.

Centered on Nellie Forbush (Erica Bundy), an American nurse stationed on a precarious island in the midst of the Second World War, South Pacific raises questions about romance, upbringing and cultural perspective. Enchanted by a French planter, Emile de Becque (Tyler Galindo), Nellie is faced with inner turmoil as she fights her way through true love and tries to keep her feet on the ground. Meanwhile, a new arrival, young Lieutenant Joe Cable (Colton Berry) is persuaded to journey to the mysterious island, Bali Ha'I by island native, Bloody Mary (Aggie Balka), and compassionate sailor, Billis (Jayson Kolbicz). The war rages on and thickens the complications faced by these universal characters.

Pulling on heartstrings with its nostalgic score, South Pacific takes its audience on an adventure worthy of the highs and lows that the tide of the island's shore experiences. With these leading characters and a polished cast of local professionals playing nurses, sailors, commanders and island natives, Bayou City Theatrics brings this show to life with a magnetizing performance.

South Pacific is directed and designed by Colton Berry with music direction by Jane Volke. The production runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 5:00 p.m., March 13 through March 29, at Bayou City Theatrics' downtown theatre, The Kaleidoscope (705 Main Street at Capitol, Suite B). Tickets ($35-$40) are available for purchase at www.BayouCityTheatrics.com, by calling our Box Office, (832) 817-8656, as well as at the door. BCT encourages purchasing tickets in advance to secure seating in their intimate venue. Convenient cash parking is located less than one block away at the corner of Capitol & Fannin, in the SAKS' garage.
