RAP'S HAWAII Comes to Honolulu Theatre for Youth, 1/11-26

By:

Rap's Hawaii, adapted from the beloved comedy of Rap Reiplinger, makes its hilarious return to the Honolulu Theatre for Youth stage for the New Year.

The play opens at Tenney Theatre on the grounds of The Cathedral of St. Andrew Friday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m., and continues Saturdays, Jan. 12, 19 & 26 at 4:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. American Sign Language-interpreted (ASL) performance is on Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m.

Single tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $15 for youth. Discounts available for HTY season ticket holders. Tickets may be ordered online at www.htyweb.org or by calling HTY at 839-9885. Walk-ups are welcome on a space available basis.

Once an HTY actor himself, Reiplinger was unquestionably one of the most memorable comic writers in Hawaii. Since HTY premiered the stage version of Rap's work in 2007, audiences have been begging for its return.

HTY Artistic Director Eric Johnson said, "It is with great pleasure that we bring back the classic work of one of our most important local comedians. During his time with HTY, Rap sharpened his skills performing in the same venues we now travel. As the overwhelming success of our last tour proves, his work continues to connect with local audiences across the State."

Johnson continued, "A student of Shakespeare, Rap understood the power of language and in his work he created some of the most distinctive comic writing, characters and situations of any local writer. His work served as a springboard for countless writers and performers who followed his lead."

Rap's Hawaii is performed by HTY company actors Maile Holck, Junior Tesoro and Charles Timtim (Timtim was also in the 2007 production). Guest director is Harry S. Wong III; set, lights and props designer is Chesley Cannon; costume designer is Sandra Payne.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth is Hawaii's non-profit professional theatre company providing theatre and drama education programs that make a difference in the lives of Hawaii's young people and families. Founded in 1955, HTY is recognized the world over as one of America's most honored theatres.
