Local Playwright Tammy Hailiopua Baker to Host Playwriting Class at Kumu Kahua Theatre, Begin. Today

Kumu Kahua Theatre will be offering a playwriting class for adults with playwright Tammy Haili'pua Baker, beginning today, July 14, 2013. This class is suitable for beginners through moderately experienced writers.

This class will include writing exercises to germinate ideas for scripting, developing characters, crafting dialogue, and creating scenes to build a one-act play.

As a playwright/director Tammy Haili'pua Baker's work centers on the development of an indigenous Hawaiian theatre aesthetic and form. Her work also focuses on the revitalization of Hawaiian language and culture, covering the use of theatre as a tool for language learning, the empowerment of cultural identity through stage performance, and the works of Ka Halau Hanakeaka, a Hawaiian medium theatre troupe she co-founded. Ka Halau Hanakeaka's productions have toured internationally and throughout the Hawaiian archipelago. In addition to her Hawaiian medium plays Baker's English and Pidgin (Hawaiian Creole English) plays have been produced at various theatres in Hawai'i. In the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa she oversees the MFA Playwriting program and is currently developing curriculum for the new Hawaiian Theatre program.

The class will be held at Native Books Na Mea Hawai'i in Ward Warehouse; 1050 Ala Moana Blvd Ste #1000, which is on the 'Ewa end of The Warehouse, under the Old Spaghetti Factory). Parking is available in The Warehouse parking lot and on Auahi Street.

All classes will take place from 9:00am to noon, on Sundays, July 14, 21, 28, August 4, 11, and 18 2013. Enrollment will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.
