Joshua Nakazawa Recital Performance Will Be Fundraiser to Benefit El Sistema Hawaii Kalikolehua

Joshua Nakazawa, a cellist in the Hawaii Symphony, has announced a recital performance as a benefit fundraiser for El Sistema Hawaii Kalikolehua on September 23, 2016. The public is invited to be leaders in their community by attending this inspirational concert, preserving and raising cultural standards through music and education.

Kalikolehua - El Sistema Hawai'i is a free music program for underprivileged children. Joshua's goal is to bring fifteen talented young students from the program to as many HSO concerts as possible during the 2016 season. All proceeds will go towards a bus for transportation, student tickets, and two chaperones per concert.

Joshua's hope is that this concert will provoke ideas and conversation that will resonate with audiences. "The feelings that provoke thoughts from the mere act of attending a concert and perhaps meeting someone new, or exploring a new environment, or hearing music that moves your soul. This is the gift that supporters will give the El Sistema students, many whom are capable of greatness but have never even had the opportunity to leave their environment," added Nakazawa.

Joshua will be joined by HSO's Concertmaster Ignace Jang, violinist Rachel Saul, violist Martha Seroogy, and pianist Katy Luo.

About Kalikolehua

Kalikolehua - El Sistema Hawai'i is a free music program for underprivileged children, and is currently operating a program in K?hi? Park housing project. Kalikolehua offers violin, cello, clarinet, flute, ukulele, songwriting and Polynesian dance, and is dedicated to the dual mission of social change and musical excellence. The program, along with many others in America and around the world, was inspired by El Sistema, a Venezuelan orchestra and choir program - a tested model of how a music program can create both great musicians, and dramatically change the life trajectory of hundreds of thousands of a nation's most-needy children, deeply benefitting youth from all backgrounds who participate. Notable graduates include Gustavo Dudamel, conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Edicson Ruiz, bassist for the Berlin Philharmonic, and the world-renownEd Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra.

About the Program

Beginning with the Beethoven Cello Sonata No.2, the program starts with one of the first romantic sonatas ever written by Beethoven, meant to exclusively showcase the cello as a solo instrument. Resembling an internal struggle with dark G minor nuances of anticipation, the sonata triumphantly ends in a powerful major key.

In light of the of the recital's goal to inspire youth, following the Beethoven is Stella Gitelman's "Expectations," which is loosely based on the Charles Dickens' Novel "Great Expectations," each movement reflecting a different character.

The program will conclude with Chopin's Cello Sonata, also in G minor, which exudes feelings of rare beauty through bitter wisdom.
