MOULIN ROUGE! The Musical will transfer from Cologne to Hamburg this fall, producers have announced. The production has played at the Musical Dome in Cologne since November 6, 2022, and will close there on July 18, 2026 before reopening at Hamburg’s Theater am Großmarkt.

The Hamburg engagement will follow the departure of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which has played at the venue for more than four years.

Based on the 2001 film directed by Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set in 1899 Paris and follows a young writer who falls in love with the star performer of the legendary Moulin Rouge nightclub. The original film starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

Since opening in Cologne, the production has welcomed more than one million audience members. The Musical Dome, originally constructed in 1996 near Cologne’s main train station for a limited engagement of Gaudi, has since become a major venue for musical productions in the city.

In Hamburg, the Theater am Großmarkt will undergo extensive renovations to accommodate the immersive staging of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Theater director Marcel Neitzel said in a statement, “Moulin Rouge! and Hamburg are a perfect match. The production reflects the spirit of the city.” He added that the show presents themes including diversity, equality, and self-expression.

Additional details regarding casting and performance dates in Hamburg will be announced at a later date.
