Breakdown
All roles are African-American. TERRANCE “TERRY” BERRY - 40’s. Comedic timing. In his attempt to please everyone else he rarely pleases himself. An optimist who’s sole mission in life is to fill the oversized shoes of his late father, the legendary founder of a popular bakery located on the South Side of Chicago. ROSALYN “ROZ” BERRY - 40’s. Terry’s no-nonsense wife. Her sole mission in life is to get her family as far away from Chicago and as far away from Terry’s overbearing mother as possible. MOTHER ROSEMARY BERRY – 60’s. Comedic timing. Terry's meddling mother. Sweet as a piece of her late husband’s famed cobbler, but sharp as the knife used to cut it. Dead set on seeing that her son never ever leaves Chicago. Must sing JAMAL BERRY - 16. Terrance and Rosalyn’s son. Swagged out. Singing optional. RACHEL – 40’s. Terrance’s childhood best friend. A knockout. Overly affectionate, especially toward her Terrance… who she's secretly had the hots for all their life. PASTOR WALLACE WILIS – 50’s. Comedic timing. The family’s overly articulate pastor. Prone to break out in sermon in the midst of conversation. His favorite line is, “For the bible says…” Must sing. UNCLE GARY – 40’s. Comedic timing. Mother Berry’s oldest son. An ex-convict who’s been incarcerated for thirty years. Recently paroled just in time to attend his father’s funeral. Must sing. GREAT GRANDMA LEOLA BERRY – 70’s. Terry’s grandmother. Goes in and out of memory loss. Carries her toy poodle Buttercup everywhere she goes. Unbeknownst to her, Buttercup has been stuffed to make it look like he’s still alive. No one could bear to tell her the dog is actually dead. ROCKY – 30’s. Comedic timing. A virgin. A few beats slower than normal. Great Grandmother Berry’s caretaker… actually no one is sure if he’s taking care of her or she him.
