PREPARATION
Please prepare 1 classical monologue, 2-minutes max., and if auditioning for the musical, 32-bars of a song of your choosing. An accompanist will be provided.

MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM

SEEKING:
- Ma Rainey (40s-60s) - Based on the real-life Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, a popular blues singer from the 1920s. Her manner is simple and direct, and she carries herself in a royal fashion.
- Levee (20s-30s) - The trumpet player in Ma Rainey’s band. He is in his early thirties, the youngest in the band. He is immature and arrogant.
- Mr. Sturdyvant (50s-60s) - The white owner of the Chicago recording studio where Ma Rainey is recording. He is a man who is obsessed with making money.
- Dussie Mae (20s-30s) - A young woman who travels with Ma. Although it’s never explicitly stated in the play, it’s implied that Dussie Mae and Ma are romantically involved.
- Sylvester (20s-30s) - Ma's devoted, fiercely defended nephew. He has a pronounced stutter and plays a pivotal role in the story's tension by performing the spoken-word intro for the title track.
