WIT follows Dr. Vivian Bearing, a brilliant and exacting poetry professor, as she undergoes experimental treatment for cancer. A scholar who devoted her life to academia, she must now face the irony and injustice of becoming the subject of research.

Vivian Bearing, Ph.D.: CAST (Cynthia Nixon)

SEEKING:

Jason Posner, M.D.:

Late 20s-early 30s. Clinical fellow, Medical Oncology Branch. Arrogant, intelligent, driven. Fascinated by the science of medicine and the intricacies of cancer; he often overlooks the human beings involved. Unsentimental and a straight-talker, he is, nonetheless, capable of wonder.

Susie Monahan, R.N., B.S.N.:

Late 20s-early 30s. Dr. Bearing’s primary nurse. Very kind and calm. A good listener – the kind of person who is 100% present. Where everyone else in the play is an intellectual powerhouse, she has the greatest emotional intelligence. A sunny disposition, but very aware of the gravity of cancer. Unafraid to fight to protect her patients and their wishes.

E.M. Ashford, Ph.D.:

70s-80s. Dr. Bearing’s former literature professor and mentor. Exacting, intimidating, brilliant. A woman to be reckoned with. Dignified and restrained, she is not a woman who expresses her feelings often or freely, but her affections are deeply rooted.

Harvey Kelekian, M.D. / Mr. Bearing:

50s-early 60s. Harvey Kelekian: Chief of Medical Oncology. Dr. Bearing’s primary doctor. A very good doctor in the prime of his career. Smart, personable, serious. He encourages Dr. Bearing to try experimental treatments, and is impressed by her strength in withstanding them. They share the fellow-feeling of life-long academics frustrated by their students and institutions. Mr. Bearing: Dr. Bearing’s father, in flashback, as he teaches a young Vivian how to read. Patient and kind, but not coddling. He challenges and encourages his gifted daughter.

Four Actors:

To play Lab Technicians, Clinical Fellows, Students, Code Team. 20s-30s. Males and females. All ethnicities.
