Breakdown

SPRING AWAKENING

Please note some roles may have potential nudity.

SEEKING:

WENDLA — 18+ to play younger. A brave, seeking spirit who craves answers from the close-lipped world around her. Wants to know things. Feral on the inside, she wants to let it out. Embarking on her spring awakening, she is inspired and haunted by strange new doubts, desires, and fears. Seeks to feel things, really feel them. Wants to fill the void.

MELCHIOR — 18+ to play younger. A charismatic young rebel who cares deeply. A free thinker who challenges the status quo. A born leader with a naïve pride in the power of his own mind to cure society’s ills and save his friends. Confident, curious, intoxicating. People listen to him. He is caught unawares by the power of his own desire and where it leads him.

MORITZ — 18+ to play younger. Melchior’s best friend. An anxious young man, who feels like the butt of puberty’s bad joke. Deeply uncomfortable in his own skin, he'd rather crawl out of it. For all his sincere efforts, he’s a failure at school and a virtual pariah at home. Feels plagued by his sexual desire, incapable of living up to the high expectations of his parents and society. Survives by his dark, self-deprecating wit. He tries so hard but can't seem to find a way to make it through.

ILSE — 18+ to play younger. Had to grow up too fast, and it shows. A childhood playmate of Wendla, Melchior, and Moritz. Now a wounded, willful outcast from bourgeois society, she lives on the edge, in frantic denial of just how desperate her “bohemian” life actually is. She's making it through at great cost. Bold and resilient, despite what she's been through.

ADULT WOMAN – Late 30s. The conceit of the adult roles is that everywhere our troubled young characters turn, they meet the same, stern, uncomprehending face of adulthood:
FRAU BERGMAN: Wendla’s skittish, inadvertently comic, social-climbing Mama. Wants to do what’s right for her child, meaning: sheltering her from the “facts of life”. She is ultimately the cause of the entire children’s tragedy.
FRAU GABOR: Melchior’s educated, empathetic, and more liberal-minded mother. She tries her best but, finally, lacks the backbone to protect Melchior and Moritz.
FRAULEIN KNUPPELDICK: Associate Headmistress of the children's school. Repressive, proprietary, and prudish to the nth degree.
FRAULEIN GROSSEBUSTENHALTER: Georg’s strict and proper piano teacher. The object of his endless sexual fantasies.

ADULT MAN – Late 30s. The conceit of the adult roles is that everywhere our troubled young characters turn, they meet the same, stern, uncomprehending face of adulthood:
HERR SONNENSTICH: An exacting and demanding school professor. Ready to beat a student who stumbles at Latin.
HERR KNOCHENBRUCH: The self-enamored headmaster of the school. Swollen with pride in his position.
HERR STEIFEL: Moritz’s rigid, emotionally shut-down father. Utterly non-responsive to his son. Till finally, he breaks down entirely at the boy’s funeral.
FATHER KAULBACH: A sonorous, Lutheran minister. Burning with the sense of righteousness.
DOCTOR VON BRAUSEPULVER: The finicky, elitist doctor for prominent bourgeois families in this tiny town. A bit of a buffoon. Also Doubles as Ilse’s father and Hanschen’s father.
