THE BODY OF MARY

SEEKING:

ANNE

Female, 50s-60s. Any Ethnicity. Doubles as SISTER GENOVEVA. A dynamo mother and wife, and an influential member of a radical sect of Judaism in the Herodian Era. Anne is dominant, deeply loving, and knows how to get things done. She is determined to protect her beloved daughter, Mary, while simultaneously serving her cause. When life gives you lemons… you plan the coming of the Messiah! Anne is funny, no nonsense, strategic, logical, ambitious, and when necessary, tender. She could easily be from Brooklyn.

CARDINAL PATRICK O’MALLEY

Male, 40s. White. Doubles as JOACHIM. The youngest member of the College of Cardinals. He’s originally from the south shore of Massachusetts and now serves as a charismatic, bombastic religious leader in New York City. Cardinal O’Malley is wide-eyed, a big talker with bold ideas. He is unnervingly politically savvy, with strong, hard-earned connections to Congress, the White House, and also the Vatican. He prides himself on being relatable and one of the guys—he loves sports, Jay-Z, good whiskey (and shamefully, porn). His faith is strong and genuine, and he believes wholeheartedly that he acts in service of God. He carries a lot of unprocessed trauma stemming from the death of his father and a weird run-in with his childhood priest; he is currently feeling very unmoored by the fast decline of his demented mother. He wants a win! He wants the God points! He wants to impress his brother (a US Senator) and the new Pope. Plus, he knows how to talk to women. He knows he’s got the skills to close this deal. What he lacks in smarts, he makes up for with authority and ambition.

MARY of NAZARETH, TEXAS

Female, 18 to early 20s. Any Ethnicity. A Catholic school graduate now working long shifts at the local Dairy Queen. She has a strong work ethic and her boss considers her reliable, but Mary’s kind of lost. She’s never been someone with “career” goals, she’s just living in this small town, taking care of her unreliable mom, trying to keep her head above water. The light of Mary’s life is her best friend Nevaeh, for whom she “steals” Blizzards and Buster Bars. Mary is currently experiencing the worst period of her existence; she’s already bled through too many tampons to count. Once she lugs out a few more bags of trash, she’ll be able to lock up and go home. But then, she finds a baby abandoned in the dumpster. With tenderness, horror, and rage, Mary strives to find a solution.

MARY of NAZARETH (CAST)

Female, 18+ to play 13. Any Ethnicity. Doubles as NEVAEH (CAST) A young, chatty, curious Jewish girl just trying to get by in 18 B.C. Nazareth. She’s good with housework, polite to neighbors, a bit of a daydreamer, and (usually!) quite content being the obedient daughter to her uber-devout parents, Anne and Joachim. Not too long ago, Mary suffered something pretty awful at the hands of some marauding Roman soldiers, and now she’s pregnant (and not married). She’s scared and heartbroken. Her parents and their cool friend, Gabriel, assure her that she’s still a virgin and reveal she’s actually carrying the son of God! This ignites a sense of strength, conviction, and rebellion in Mary she didn’t know she had. Think: your favorite sitcom daughter/big sister—spunky, sweet, a pleaser who is suddenly finding her voice.

MOTHER MARY JOSEPH (CAST)

Female, late 40s-60s. Any Ethnicity. Mother Superior of the Little Sisters of Self Sacrifice and Martyrdom, a convent of working nuns in New York City. She’s been fervently serving the community since college and currently leads her sisters in the operation of numerous shelters for trafficking survivors and the unhoused population in the city. Mother is tired and overworked, but filled to the brim with purpose and faith! She’s joyful in her love for God. She’s focused, but not uptight—this nun has a sense of humor! Mother Mary Joseph can’t imagine why Cardinal O’Malley would request a meeting with her, but she’s always willing to discuss possibilities for collaboration. Mother is a dynamic woman, and unafraid of going head-to-head with anyone, and yet, she is cautious and tactful in the midst of conflict. Mother Mary Joseph carries a dark secret from her past: as a pregnant teenager, she was forced to surrender the baby to the church.

GABRIEL (CAST)

Male, 20s. Any Ethnicity. Doubles as FATHER DONATO (CAST) A young, charming, charismatic heartthrob who belongs to the same religious community as Anne, Joachim, and Mary. Gabriel is in cahoots with Joachim and Anne, and presents himself to Mary as an angel (in disguise!) and messenger of God. With an affecting balance of warmth, flattery, and cool-guy manipulation, Gabriel works hard to convince Mary to agree to carry the child of God. He’s resourceful, upbeat, knows how to work a room, and has guru/peer mentor/camp counselor vibes.
