Winner of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play! – Perhaps the best-loved of August Wilson’s ten-play Pittsburgh Cycle, Fences tells the story of a family trying to stay together while reaching for their dreams. Former sports hero Troy Maxson leans on his son to realize his own unfulfilled dreams in this masterpiece of American theater.

World Premiere! – Next in VSC’s renowned American Soil series, (The series that brought you SCKBSTD-A New Musical by Bruce Hornsby) this moving new story follows a group of military spouses brought together by duty and bound by honor and friendship. Fates intertwined, the group transcends their differences as they stand by one another through a dramatic crisis that changes their lives forever.
Seeking:
Chandra Rose. African-American, 40s. Her husband is Curtis Bowles, the Commanding Officer for RIVRON One, a unit of the Navy Riverines patrolling the rivers in Baghdad. A therapist from New York City, she is newly married and new to the Navy.
Mrs. William Spencer Yates. Sometimes referred to as the “Old Gal.” An elderly Navy widow, whose husband was killed in the Korean conflict. He was an Admiral. She’s 70 years old and has gray hair. She comes straight out of the 1942 book The Navy Wife.
Marcia Lowe. Early 40s. Her husband Daryl is a Senior Officer in the Riverine unit, second in command under Chandra’s husband.
Vicky Corrino. Filipino. Late 30s. Her husband Jim is senior enlisted in the Riverines. Vicky is the Ombudsman for the Riverine unit.
Joella “Jo” Smith. White. Age 17. Her husband, Jo-Jo, is lower enlisted, and is serving as a gunner in the Riverines. She is covered with tattoos, has a dog collar around her neck and wears her hair in a Mohawk. She is poor and uneducated.
Lt. Roberto Gonzalez is a junior officer in the Navy. He should be played by a Latino actor in his 30’s.

Late 20s; Beautiful, intelligent, scientific-nerdy, and extremely confident in her opinions. Knows what she wants and is determined to get it. A sparkling mezzo soprano, but should feel comfortable jazzing it up. A young Barbara Cook, Vocal range: B flat to G
THE FROG
20s; Quirkily appealing. He’s cute, but not cloyingly so— and not too tall. A frog of colorful ethnic origins (perhaps of Hispanic, or Pan-Asian, or African, or Pacific Islander descent!) Modest, meditative fellow, compassionate, easy-going. Desperately in love with the human Princess Clementine. Vocal range: High Baritone/Low Tenor, C to G
KING FREDERIC:
50s; A wise, beneficent ruler, a true ‘philosopher king’, who cares deeply for the welfare of his people, his kingdom and the happiness of his daughters. Father to the Princess Clementine and Hortense. Vocal range: Baritone, B flat to E
QUEEN MARGOT
Late 40s; Beautiful, practical, proud of her taste in clothes and interior decorating. A Queen of North African origins; Feels herself to be the more practical and realistic partner of her royal marriage. Doesn’t care for disruptions of any kind. Wants both her daughters happily married. Vocal range: Mezzo, B to E
HORTENSE
20s; beautiful and sexy, but spoiled younger sister (mysteriously of Pan-Asian origins, possibly a foundling?) to Clementine and unhappily wed to handsome prince Claus. A comedienne with a strong vocal belt. Jealous of her elder sister and unsatisfied in her marriage. Vocal range: Alto, A to high F (must belt up to D)
CLAUS
30s; German-born husband to Hortense. Matinee-idol handsome, well-meaning, but not very bright. He married Hortense to inherit her father’s kingdom. Vocal range: Hight Baritone, C to F
FOUR TAOIST MASTERS:
Mixed ages and races (Taoist Masters gathered from the various races and corners of the Universe); 2 men, 2 women, they comprise our singing quartet, jazz and do-wop skills required, as well as comic style. The Masters are our timeless and universal consciousness who weave a humorous contemporary viewpoint through the entire show, linking scenes and aiding the characters. Vocal description: actor/singers skilled in harmonies, but with interesting individual voices. One man should be a high tenor, the other a high baritone. One of the women should have high soprano notes and a great belt.
EVERYMAN, EVERYWOMAN:
(1 Man, 1 Woman): TWO shape-shifting beings of contrasting ethnicity appear variously as Peasants, Tao Maidens, Suitors, Frog Damselle, Courtiers. Man: Low Tenor, C to G. Woman: Soprano, A to A flat (with a capability to belt)
THE WHIPPING MAN

In this classic American comedy of opposites, old habits die hard but friendship stays true. Newly divorced, a sloppy sportswriter and a fastidious news writer test their friendship by becoming roommates.
