The season rehearses and performs in St. Louis, MO. Actors are cast on a per show basis and not as part of a repertory company. An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical
mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas
are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.
We encourage members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the
extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and
dressing rooms.

THE MUNY’S COVID-19 VACCINATION POLICY: In an effort to provide the safest possible
workplace, The Muny requires that all backstage employees be fully vaccinated, including the CDC
recommended booster when eligible. The CDC currently defines “fully vaccinated” as those who have
received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna shots or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson
shot. Fully vaccinated individuals who received the Pfizer-BioNtech or Moderna shots are eligible for
the booster shot five months from their last dose, and individuals who received the Johnson and
Johnson shot are eligible two months from their last dose. The Muny will require the booster for
eligible employees no later than 2 weeks before the start of employment or within 10 days of eligibility
for those who become eligible during their employment.

SEEKING

[CAROLE KING] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), Caucasian, 16-29. A unique, funny,
and vulnerable girl born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn; a reluctant star with no pretense and a passion
for music. Carole begins the musical as an enthusiastic, young songwriter of 16 and we follow the ups
and downs of both her career and personal life as she turns into the superstar she is known as today.
Mezzo-Soprano (F3-F5) with a powerful, distinctive voice. Piano skills are a plus.

[GERRY GOFFIN] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), Caucasian, late teens-late 20s. Carole
King's first husband and song writing partner born to a Jewish family, writing lyrics to many of her early
hits. Smoldering, dark and handsome with a rebel vibe; although sexy, he is innately sympathetic,
wounded, and tortured; an ambitious artist always striving for more. Baritone/Tenor (C3-G4) voice.

[CYNTHIA WEIL] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), Caucasian, 25-40. A lyricist born to a
Jewish family working at 1650 Broadway, she and her song writing partner Barry Mann form a friendly
rivalry with Carole and Gerry. She becomes one of Carole's best friends and closest confidants and
forms a flirtatious relationship with Barry. Sophisticated, smart and chic with a quick wit and humor.
Has great comic timing and strong Mezzo/Belt (F3-E5) voice.

[BARRY MANN] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), Caucasian, 25-40. A songwriter born to a
Jewish family working at 1650 Broadway who becomes romantically involved with his lyricist, Cynthia.
Barry is a perfect blend of humorous neuroses, charm, intelligence and drive, but appealing and
likeable. A bit of a player, Barry falls in love with Cynthia and spends much of his time convincing her
to marry him. Has great comic timing. Tenor (C3-A4) pop/rock voice. Guitar skills a plus.

[DON KIRSHNER] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), Caucasian, 40-50. A successful record
producer and music publisher born to a Jewish family working at 1650 Broadway. He launches the
careers of Carole, Gerry and Cynthia and helps foster the friendly rivalry between the teams of
Goffin/King and Mann/Weil. Fast-talking, energetic force of nature; powerful, direct and sometimes
intimidating; a hit maker. Baritone (A2-C4) voice.

[GENIE KLEIN] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), Caucasian, 40-50. Carole's
overprotective and loving Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by

life and her husband’s infidelity; protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes. Non-
singing role.

intelligent girl who wants more out of life than an ordinary existence. She is optimistic, fun-loving,
independent and eager to experience life. Contemporary soprano with a strong and clear mix/belt to
an F.

[BEAST] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, late 20s-late 30s. A prince
transformed into a terrifying beast for his lack of compassion. He is hot-tempered, volatile and
hopeless but has a warm, loving heart buried beneath his gruff exterior. Strong singer with a
commanding speaking voice and presence. Baritone to an F.

[GASTON] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, late 20s-late 30s. The
egotistical, larger-than-life, toxically masculine villain determined to marry Belle. He is manipulative,
yet charming and earnest. Baritone.

[LEFOU] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 20s-30s. Gaston’s bumbling
sidekick. He is loyal, energetic, and optimistic, but not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Character
baritone to an F#.

[MAURICE] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 50-60. Belle’s loving, eccentric
father. A child at heart and inventor in his own world. Baritone.

[COGSWORTH] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 30s-50s. A tightly-wound,
enchanted mantle clock and the head of the Beast’s household. He is uptight, strict, and punctual but
also hard-working, faithful, and thorough. Baritone.

French, very debonair enchanted candelabra. He is a loyal and steadfast servant to the Beast.
Baritone to a F#.

[MRS. POTTS] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 30s-50s. A warm-hearted,
maternal, enchanted teapot. She is loyal, caring and playful. Warm mezzo soprano voice.

[BABETTE] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, 20s-30s. A saucy, enchanted
feather-duster and the object of Lumiere’s affections. She is the playful, gorgeous, seductive French
maid. Dances. Mezzo soprano.

[MADAME DE LA GRANDE BOUCHE] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity,
35-55. A former opera diva-turned-enchanted wardrobe. She is caring and refined, loud and the life of
the party. Legit operatic soprano.

[CHIP] Boy, any ethnicity, 8-11. An adorable, inquisitive, enchanted teacup who is the child of Mrs.
Potts. Innocent, playful, and bright-eyed. Unchanged soprano voice.

American Chess Champion. Arrogant and temperamental, but a genius; his chess playing is
revolutionary. Difficult childhood that haunts him. Sexy, dangerous and obsessive. Impulsive,
charismatic. Rock tenor.

[ANATOLY SERGIEVSKY] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, age 28-40.
Russian Chess Champion. Unexpectedly charming. An intelligent, sensitive and passionate man with
a gentle sense of humor. Impressionable. Restless with the life he finds himself trapped in until he
meets Florence. Becomes torn between his love for the game, Florence, his wife, his country, etc. until
he is practically shattered by the pressure. High baritone.

[IVAN MOLOKOV] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, age 35-50. Anatoly's
Chess Second and an associate of the KGB. Intense, dark, mysterious, intellectually formidable. An
excellent, subtle manipulator. Bass/Baritone.

[WALTER DE COURCEY] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, age 35-50.
Freddie's Agent, secretly working as a CIA agent. Seemingly respectable, trustworthy. Fast talking,
1980s wheeling and dealing kind of guy, with an edge. Baritone.

[THE ARBITER] Character is male (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, age 28-50. Head of the
World Chess Championship, officiates over all matches. Sharp, international businessman. The
epitome of cool.” Powerful, bold, commanding, controlling, dominating. Smooth, but with a very quick
temper. Eccentric. Rock high baritone.

[SVETLANA SERGIEVSKY] Character is female (cis, trans or non-binary), any ethnicity, age 28-50.
Anatoly's wife. Domestic, wholesome, strong willed. A striking contrast to Florence's sophistication.
Strong alto/belt, with a little bit of head voice.

[TONY] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Polish, 18+ to play 18. A dreamer with a romantic
and very loyal heart. Former leader of the Jets who has left the gang lifestyle and is now focused on a
better version of himself. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls
deeply in love with Maria and meets an untimely death. Genuine, kind and sincere. Tenor (Bb to Hi C).

[MARIA] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary), Puerto Rican, 18+ to play 18. Romantic,
idealistic and craving independence, with a naivety that makes her vulnerable. Recently moved from
Puerto Rico for an arranged marriage to Chino. She falls deeply in love with Tony and finds herself at
the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Her quiet strength ultimately centers the play.
Bernardo's sister. Classical soprano to high C.

[BERNARDO] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Puerto Rican, 20s. A proud, protective,
handsome man coming to terms with life in America and the discrimination he continues to face.
Bernardo seeks to carve out territory for himself and the rest of the Sharks in the Upper West Side.
Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend. Leader of the Sharks. An excellent dancer with strong ballet/jazz
technique. Baritone (G to E).

[ANITA] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary), Puerto Rican, 20s. Feisty and assertive. She is
friend and confidante to Maria, and desperately tries to shield her from the dangers of the gang
conflict. Bernardo's girlfriend, she is unapologetically passionate about finding a good life in America.
An excellent dancer with strong ballet/jazz technique. Mezzo-Soprano (F to F).

[DOC] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 50-65. The owner of the candy store where the
Jets hang out. He tries to guide the Jets youthful angst and provides a safe haven for Tony. Old
fashioned and wise in his ways. A moral compass.

[CHINO] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Puerto Rican, 20s. An angry and, at times,
naive Shark who turns murderous and vengeful once when he feels betrayed. Suitor to Maria and
friend of Bernardo's. Strong dancer.

[RIFF] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 20s. The impulsive and quick-tempered current
leader of the Jets. Tony’s best friend, they relate like brothers but on different paths. He seeks to
eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang's dominance, and is eventually murdered by
Bernardo. An excellent dancer with strong ballet/jazz technique. Baritone (A to G).

[KRUPKE] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 30-60s. The local beat cop who works under
Lieutenant Schrank. He has no patience for the gang’s conflict and tries to keep tensions from

erupting between them. Regularly mocked by the local gangs. His bark is worse than his bite.

[GLADHAND] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 30-50s. Character with good comic timing.
Age and type are very open – his humor is born of circumstance and his drive to keep peace in a
tense situation.

[A-RAB] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 18+ to play 16-20s. Member of the Jets. An
excellent dancer with strong ballet/jazz technique who sings well.

[ANYBODYS] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary), 18+ to play 16-20s. A confident tomboy
type who is desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her for her ambitions, but
generally appreciate their company. She/they ultimately earn their place in the Jets. An excellent
dancer with strong ballet/jazz technique who sings well.

[ACTION] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 18+ to play 16-20s. Member of the Jets.
Reactive and hungry for “action.” An excellent dancer with strong ballet/jazz technique who sings well.

[LT. SCHRANK] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 40-60s. A local plain-clothes police
detective frustrated by the ongoing violence between the Jets and Sharks. Blunt, brash, and
unapologetic, underneath he is just as prejudiced against the Sharks as the Jets are. He is obstinate,
hard, and gets some enjoyment from riling up the Jets in order to gather information.

[SNOWBOY] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 18+ to play 16-20s. Member of the Jets. An
excellent dancer with strong ballet/jazz technique who sings well.

[BABY JOHN] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), 18+ to play 16-20s. Member of the Jets.
An excellent dancer with strong ballet/jazz technique who sings well.

[SEYMOUR KRELBORN] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity, mid-20s-30s. A
struggling introvert who comes from poverty but has a hero’s heart. Genuine and soft exterior with a
strong moral center. Is equally at home in comedy and pathos. Bari-tenor. Vocal Range: A2 - G4, sings
musical theatre style but also cuts loose into a rock sound.

[AUDREY] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity, mid 30s-40s. A kind and
caretaking woman who works at the flower shop with Seymour. Funny, warm and forgiving. She has
low self-esteem, but beautiful dreams of happiness and security. Vocal Range: G#3 - D5 Soprano with
strong rock mix/belt.

[CRYSTAL, RONNETE & CHIFFON] All three characters are female (cis, trans, or non-binary), black,
mid-20s-30s. Our musical guides through the evening, sometimes acting as a Greek Chorus – they
know what’s coming. Vocal Ranges: low alto to belt soprano, strong R&B style.

[MR. MUSHNIK] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity, mid-50s-60s. Seasoned
owner of the failing Skid Row flower shop and Seymour’s boss. Presents as a pessimist but does
have some hope and thirst. He is a good man who is given the chance to turn into a greedy one, and
(sadly), takes it. Baritone. Vocal Range: G2-F4

[ORIN SCRIVELLO, D.D.S./OTHERS] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity, mid
20s-40s. Egotistical dentist with sadistic tendencies and a passion for leather. Audrey’s abusive
boyfriend who gets drunk on power and privilege. Doubles as other roles (Wino #2, Customer, Radio
Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip, and Patrick Martin), a strong comic with great
transformational skills. Vocal Range: Bass (a la Johnny Cash) or Bari-tenor.

[VOICE OF THE PLANT “AUDREY II”] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity,
Any age. The voice is that of a seductive, street-smart ‘villain’ – a cross between Wolfman Jack and
Barry White. Baritone with extension. Vocal Range: G2 - G4 with strong R&B style.

[“AUDREY II” MANIPULATION/ OTHERS] Any gender, any ethnicity, 18+ to be a puppeteer. A strong
mover and can create multiple characters. Has comedic chops. Experience with puppetry is a plus.

[MARK] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity, 20s-early 30s. Underfunded,
underground filmmaker, he has turned his back on his affluent upbringing. Likeable, if occasionally
high strung, he is almost the narrator of the show. Baritone/second tenor.

[COLLINS] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Black, mid 20s-30s. Philosopher, teacher,
anarchist, AIDS activist. Sings a huge, emotional, gospel-style ballad. Low, soulful baritone voice.

[BENNY] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Black, 20s-30s. A striver, who grew up in the
projects and made it to the Ivy League, he wants to be the next Quincy Jones. Slick and cocky, a
smooth operator. Pop baritone/second tenor.

[MAUREEN] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity, 20s-30s. Funny, outrageous
and sexually free; an attention-hungry East Village performance artist. Huge, versatile rock & roll belt
voice.

[MIMI] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary), Latinx, late teens-20s. A round the way girl
used to male attention, with some dark secrets. She is innocent and vulnerable, yet extremely savvy.
Fragile drug addict. Raw rock & roll voice with a high belt.

[ANGEL] Character is gender non conforming, Latine, late teens-early 30s. A musician and dancer

who often performs as femme. Funny with lots of style. Extremely warm, loveable and nurturing. High
tenor with falsetto.

sardonic wit, an Ivy League grad who's abandoned her debutante background. Great pop belt.

wannabe with a mega-watt dream of Donna Summer-eque glory. Bold, brassy, and quick on the
quip—she has no faith in anything or anyone but herself. A powerhouse disco diva voice with a huge
range and high belt.

[MOTHER SUPERIOR] Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary), any ethnicity, 45–65. An old-
school Catholic traditionalist with a spine of steel, a will of iron, an acid tongue, and a hidden heart. Strong, unwavering mezzo voice.

[CURTIS JACKSON] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Black, late 30s–50. A super cool,
super confident, super smooth bad guy. A tough narcissist with flair, sex appeal, and charisma. Elegant
and dangerous. Is strong-voiced with big range. Low baritone or high bari-tenor with a strong falsetto.

[LT. EDDIE SOUTHER] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Black, 25–45. A Desk Cop. He is
charming and straightforward. A beautiful high baritone or tenor.

Tough, out of the Depression Era, full of vinegar and humor, with twice the energy of anyone half her
age. She's seen them come and go, and nothing fazes this Sister. She's quick on the wisecracks and
always ready to roll up her sleeves and dig in. Strong belt and legit a plus, but more importantly, able
to rap and be very funny.

[MONSIGNOR O’HARA] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Caucasian, 50s–60s. Stately
but benevolent, with a Going My Way twinkle. Strong character with a strong baritone voice.

[TJ] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Black, 20s–40s. Curtis' nephew. An undersized,
overeager young man who would do anything to please his uncle, much to his uncle’s dismay. He’s
well-intended, but doesn’t always have the brain power to think ahead. Has comic chops. Very strong
tenor, with a strong disco falsetto.

[JOEY] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Caucasian, 30s–40s. Big, burly, and fiercely
loyal. Joey fancies himself a master in the ways of lovemaking. Has comic chops. Strong baritone,
with a strong disco falsetto.

[PABLO] Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary), Latino, 20–35. Curtis' bodyguard who keeps
mouthing off. Has comic chops. Strong baritone or tenor, with a strong disco falsetto.
