BREAKDOWN

In August Wilson’s masterpiece, history unfolds around everyday lives against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. Long-time regulars gather at the local diner in Pittsburgh’s Hill District to gossip, flirt and play the numbers. Now the owner must decide whether to let the city take over his building or sell it to a shrewd, local businessman. Part of Wilson’s trailblazing American Century Cycle, Two Trains Running paints a compassionate and unforgettable portrait of ordinary people in the midst of transformation.

Please note: Actors must be available for all production dates at both theatres in order to be considered.

SEEKING:

RISA (Female, mid 30s) African American. A woman made wise by her young life's sobering inner-city journey, including her awareness of what a deeply-rooted woman she is. She exists in a male-dominated world that will not or cannot 'receive' the fullness of her womanhood. The matter of her self-mutilation, albeit extreme, is equally pragmatic and its result compels men to see her as a singular being who is far more compelling than their perception of her primarily being a sexual conquest. She knows she is both a mystery and frustration to those around her who try to 'figure her out', and she is equally aware of how this translate into her quiet dominance over the restaurant. Her personal journey through the course of the play is a slow-moving evolution from her self-imposed and manageable solitude into fully embodying her nature as a whole, vibrant black woman standing at the precipice of a social revolution.
