About: Jessie is a corporate lawyer in a Manhattan firm. Lina is a community-college dropout and born-and-bred Long Islander. They don’t seem to have anything in common, but marooned at home with infants, they strike up a fast friendship. In the yard between their houses—as far as their baby monitors will reach—they bond over sleep deprivation, unreliable childcare, and “having it all.” A candid comedy about who gets to make which hard choices in the tinderbox of parenthood and class in the United States.

Seeking

Jessie
female; mid 30s. Married to a North Shore native; moved here (from Upper East Side) to raise her family. Educated, articulate, lovely, warm. From the Midwest and has that Midwestern ready-smile. Can bend towards anxiety, though. Doesn't like empty days on calendars, or being disliked. Works 90 hour weeks in the city as a corporate lawyer -- or did, until Allie was born. Now she's in yoga pants.

Lina
female; late 20s/ early 30s. From Long Beach (on South Shore of Long Island) and you can tell immediately -- she is very South Shore. Acrylic nails, big hoops, fluorescent yellow sneakers, Mets trucker hat on game days, huge Italian family. Failed out of community college, has a bad mouth, blasts Kanye from her car. But Lina is also fantastically winning. She's fun, funny and refreshingly genuine. Works at St. Francis Hospital.

Mitchell
[THIS ROLE IS CAST]. mid- to late 30s, or slightly older. Adrienne's husband, works in investment capital. A math nerd who is amazing with numbers, not people. Serious, shrewd, sensitive. From Utica and scholarship-ed his way out of a tough home (and has that quality about him: of someone who works too hard, trying to fill a hole that has nothing to do with money). But becoming a father has changed him. He makes goofy faces now. He stares out windows. His sentences end in more question marks.

Adrienne
female; mid/late 30s. Mitchell's wife. Elegant, powerful, aloof, and slightly rock n roll. Has eyes that are cat-like and assessing. Beautiful. Looks like she speaks lots of languages, and does. Grew up in a penthouse on Central Park, not that she looks the part. Adrienne wears big rings, vintage leather jackets, Sally Hershberger haircuts, a bold lip. She could give you the best-ever guided tour of MoMA. Ferociously smart, she has never signed an e-mail with an x or an o. A jewelry designer. A very successful one.

BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA
(East Coast Premiere)
Writer: Anna Moench
Director: Jason Peck
Casting Director: Jessi Blue Gormezano
Scenic Design: Fufan Zhang
First Rehearsal: June 24, 2019 (Weekday Rehearsals in the Evening)
Preview: July 18, 2019
Opening: July 19, 2019
Closing: August 3, 2019

Thursday, July 18th @ 8pm, Friday, July 19th @ 8pm, Saturday, July 20th @ 8pm, Sunday, July 21st @ 4pm, Friday, July 26th @ 8pm, Saturday, July 27th @ 4pm, Sunday, July, 28th @ 7pm, Thursday, August 1st @ 8pm, Friday, August 2nd @ 8pm, Saturday, August 3rd @ 8pm

About: John and his daughter Caitlyn are birders. As they scan the skies over their backyard in suburban Maryland looking for elusive birds, years go by. Relationships begin and end. Children grow up and parents age. The climate and the world change in small and vast ways. BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA takes a close look at the relationship of a father and daughter over the course of a decade as they struggle to understand the parts of one another that defy understanding.

Seeking

John
A scientist and avid birder. An idealist and man of convictions who needs to be right. His wife is the breadwinner of the family and he is working diligently to prove his worth. Okay with other people’s opinions so long as they align with his. Demands attention but has little patience to give it except when birding. Loves deeply but has a hard time showing it. Character ages from late fifties to late sixties

Caitlyn
A copy editor who works for a conservative news outlet. Lives in fear of letting people down and desperately wants her father’s approval though she plays it off as indifference. Has tepid political convictions and allows her financial and romantic circumstances to guide her motivations. The person you’ll talk to when there is no one more interesting in the room. Character ages from late twenties/early thirties to late thirties/early forties.

NOTE: John and Caitlyn take nearly everything the other says personally.
