Seeking:
Irina:
20s, the youngest sister. Open hearted, emotionally present, hopeful. Dreams of going to Moscow to find the man of her dreams and work that she feels passionate about. By the end of the play she gets her teaching license and is engaged to a man she respects but does not love.
Masha:
mid 20s – early 30s – the middle sister. beautiful, innocently sensuous, pensive, smart, sad, capable of irony, capable of passion. In an unhappy marriage. Falls completely and desperately in love with Vershinin and when he leaves she falls apart. Need an actress of immense depth and emotional availability.
Olga:
late 20s-mid 30s. The oldest sister. Straightforward, simple with language. A hard working high school teacher. The mother figure who is protective of her sisters. Tries to remain positive in spite of feeling she has aged, grown thin and disillusioned with life.
Solyony:
30s-40s. A weird guy. An outsider. Wants to be loved and respected but socially awkward with a short fuse. Something dangerous about him – not quite right.
Vershinin:
40s, sexy, smart but not book smart, a soldier, capable of wild passion. Married (for the second time) with 2 little daughters. Inspires those around him to think and feel strongly and converse about life. Irresponsibly charming without thought of the consequences of his actions. (Used to be called “The Lovesick Major” when he was young). Masha falls deeply in love with him during the course of the play and falls apart when he leaves at the end of the play.
