Preparation
Prepare 32 bars of a song; have contrasting piece ready. Bring sheet music in correct key; accompanist provided.

Be prepared to dance.

Sides also provided at the audition and will be available on the web site at
www.theatrezone-florida.com.

Bring picture and resume, stapled together.

OF THEE I SING (Concert Adaptation)
Music & Lyrics: George & Ira Gershwin, Book: George S. Kaufman & Morrie Ryskind.
1st reh: 9/26/16. Runs 10/6-10/9.

4 AEA Contracts available. Co-pro with Florida Gulf Coast University’s Bower School of Music and the Arts and will be performed at the FGCU Tobe Hall.

John P. Wintergreen: CAST. 30–45. Dashing, candidate for President of the U.S. Baritone/Tenor.

Mary Turner: 22-40. Wholesome, girl next door, campaign assistant. Engaged to Wintergreen. Soprano.

Diana Devereaux: CAST. 22-40. Southern beauty contest winner (the fairest flower of the South) who is supposed to marry Wintergreen. Hedy La Rue type. Mezzo.

Alexander Throttlebottom: 30-60. Vice Presidential candidate who wanders the White House unrecognized by his own staff. Tenor.

Nellie Cohan: 40-60. Tap dancing Vaudevillian performer. George's mother. Mezzo.

Josie Cohan: 22-30. Very sweet, tap dancing Vaudevillian performer, George's sister. Mezzo/Soprano.

Ethel Levey: 22-35. Tap dancing Vaudevillian performer. George's 1st wife. Doubles in Women’s Ensemble. Mezzo/Soprano.

Agnes Nolan: 25-35. Tap dancing Vaudevillian performer. George's 2nd wife. Doubles in Women’s Ensemble. Mezzo/Soprano.

Antonio Salieri: 40–60. Plays himself in his late 30’s-40’s and also mid-70’s. Wry, charming, sophisticated and resentful of Mozart’s God-given abilities. As narrator of the play, leads the audience through the story. Requires excellent language and vocal skills.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: 25-40. High-strung, childish, giggly, profane and vulgar, yet genuinely innocent.

Constanze Weber: 22-35. Lively and lusty wife to Mozart. Beautiful and appealing as well as coarse and common.

Joseph II: 40-65. Amiable, short attention-spanned Emperor of Austria.
Cheerful, dapper, pleased with himself individual.

Count Johann Kilian von Strack: 40-65. Stiff and proper Royal Chamberlain. Official to the bone. Humorless.

Count Orsini-Rosenberg: 40-65. Supercilious, portly opera director. Grand and slightly pretentious.

Baron van Swieten: 40-65. Solemn, doctrinaire; Prefect of the Imperial Library. Ardent Freemason, lover of old music and probably lacking any sense of humor.

Venticelli #1 & #2/Citizen of Vienna: 25-60. The Venticelli are purveyors of fact, rumors and gossip throughout the play. Are the eyes and ears of Salieri. Often function as one mind.

Major-Domo/Salieri’s Valet/Citizen of Vienna: 40-65. Efficient court servant / Valet to Salieri.

Guiseppi Bonno/Salieri’s Cook/Citizen of Vienna: 55-65. Non-speaking role, Efficient court servant / Cook to Salieri.

Katherina Cavalieri/Citizen of Vienna: 22-35. Non-speaking role, Opera singer, Salieri’s pupil and, later, mistress.

Theresa Salieri/Citizen of Vienna: 25-40. non-speaking role, wife of Salieri, a serious woman.

1st reh: 2/22/17. Runs 3/3 - 3/13.

Violet Newstead: 40-55. Smart, efficient, widowed mother of teenage son. Constantly being passed up for promotion in the boys’-club world of climbing the corporate ladder. Runs the office from her desk while her boss takes the credit. Frustrated with her position, but not bitter. Comedic role – witty and sharp. Mezzo.

Judy Bernly: 35–45. Meek housewife with her first foray into the working world when husband runs off with his secretary. Judy changes throughout the play into a force to be reckoned with, taking control of herself and her life. Comedic role – confusion. Mezzo

Doralee Rhodes: 25-35. Sexy, country gal who is the secretary for the boss, Franklin Hart. Misunderstood at beginning of the play due to rumors about an affair with the boss, but comes to be a strong cog in the machine that destroys Hart. Country singing. Comedy is sharp and no-nonsense. Mezzo/Soprano.

Franklin Hart: 40-55. Pompous jerk of a boss. If he weren’t the boss, he would have no friends at all. Spends his time trying to seduce Doralee. Smarmy. Sexist, Egotistical, Lying, Hypocritical, Bigot. Baritone.

Roz Keith: 40-55. Office busy-body. In love with Hart; does everything she can to undermine the rest of the office to earn his affections. Over the top comedic role. Mezzo.

Kathy: 30–50. Office Gossip. Doubles in Women’s Ensemble. Mezzo/Soprano.

Margaret: 30–50. Office lush. Doubles in Women’s Ensemble. Mezzo/Soprano.

Maria: 25–40. Young and vibrant secretary. Gets fired by Hart wrongfully. Doubles in Women’s Ensemble. Mezzo/Soprano.

Missy Hart: 40–50. Hart’s Wife. Fluttery and Ditzy. Doubles in Women’s Ensemble. Mezzo/Soprano.

Joe: 30-40. Charming, attractive accountant who is interested in Violet. Doubles in Men’s Ensemble. Baritone/Tenor.

Dwayne Rhodes: 25–40. Doralee’s husband. Country. Doubles in Men’s Ensemble. Baritone/Tenor.

Josh Newstead: 18+. Violet’s teenage son. Must look young enough to pass as a teenager, but old enough to double in the Men’s Ensemble. Baritone/Tenor.

Bob Enright: 35–45. Franklin Hart’s Yes-Man. Trained by Violet and promoted over her. Doubles in Men’s Ensemble. Baritone/Tenor.

Dick Bernley: 35–45. Judy’ sleazy ex-husband. Doubles in Men’s Ensemble. Baritone/Tenor.

Russell Tinsworthy: 45–55. Chairman of the Board of the company. Colonel Sanders type. Doubles in Men’s Ensemble. Baritone/Tenor.

Legs Diamond/Peter Allen: Role CAST. 40–50. Plays himself and the lead character of the song and dance gangster, Legs Diamond. Tenor.

Flo: 40-50. Nightclub owner and torch singer, former partner with Legs. Mezzo.

Kiki: 22-35. Voluptuous, sexually charged woman. Ex-night-club cigarette girl who gets a job at the night club because she’s the mob bosses girlfriend. She may appear to be dim-witted, but she knows how to use her sexuality to get what she wants. Mezzo.

Madge: 25–40. Night club singer dancer. Doubles in the Women’s Ensemble. Mezzo.

A.R. Rothstein: 40-55. Ruthless mob boss who controls the nightclub scene and the city’s underground. Baritone.
