Kay - 17, pretty, fragile, pale, a poetic soul; grew up with her grandmother in small Georgia town, studying at Atlanta University. As described by author Adrienne Kennedy, Kay is the daughter of a colored woman and a white man.

Christopher - 17, handsome, white, son of powerful segregationist; has a rebellious streak in him but also perhaps a bit of his father; has a romantic air; wants to escape small Georgia town, marry Kay and go to NY to become an actor; needs to sing

Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to attend. Non-traditional gender casting is possible. Some roles may be doubled.

Leontes - King of Sicilia. Wild, rich, and filthy imagination. Lacks faith until the end of the play. A man overtaken by passion and then regret, remorse. There’s something profoundly unstable in the man, a kind of insecurity which makes him cold with Hermoine at the top and later erupts into violent, bitter jealousy and madness. Described as a tyrant. 30’s-50’s, later will age 16 years.

Mamillius - Young son of Leontes and Hermione; Prince of Sicilia. Precocious, imaginative, playful, sometimes difficult. Dies, of a broken heart. Around 10 years old.

Camillo - A lord of Sicilia. A friend and advisor to Leontes and then Polixinies. Wise, loyal, compassionate. 30’s - 60’s, later will age 16 years.

Antigonus - A lord of Sicilia. Husband of Paulina. A father. Serves Leontes. Takes great care of baby Perdita, perhaps even sacrifices himself to save her life. 30’s - 60’s.

Cleomenes - A lord of Sicilia. Delivers the oracle’s message from Delphos. Possibly a priest/priestess. Spiritual - connected to the gods. 20’s-60’s

Dion - A lord of Sicilia. Delivers the oracle's message from Delphi’s. Possibly a priest/priestess. Spiritual - connected to the gods. 20’s-60’s

Polixenes - King of Bohemia and childhood friend of Leontes. Warm, charming, sexual. Explosive and violent when Florizel defies him. Around the same age as Leontes. Will age 16 years.

Florizel - Son of Polixenes; Prince of Bohemia. Brash, passionate, rebellious. A romantic - he’s willing to throw away his life to be with Perdita. Early 20’s

Archidamus - A lord of Bohemia. 20’s-70’s. A diplomat, a fancy talker.

Old Shepherd - The shepherd who finds and raises Perdita. Simple, kind, a great father to Perdita and his son. A clown. 50’s

Clown - cast.

Autolycus - He used to work at the court, serving Prince Florizel, but has fallen from grace. Now he is a rogue, a musician and singer, a devil. Possesses a thrillingly anarchic spirit. Survives by ‘the silly cheat.’ Able to con a clown. Describes himself as a coward — afraid of violence. Funny. Dirty. Sexy. Can charm a crowd.

A Mariner - A man of the sea. 20’s-70’s

Hermione - Queen of Sicilia; the wife of Leontes; mother of Mamillius and Perdita. Warm, witty, flirtatious, charming, dignified and fierce. Loves her husband. Craves his affection, which he metes out sparingly. She endures unimaginable tragedy and humiliation at Leontes hands, but is able to somehow reconcile with him in Act 5. 30’s, and then later will age 16 years.

Perdita - Daughter of Leontes and Hermione; Princess of Sicilia; later, the wife of Florizel, and Princess of Bohemia. Warm, like her mother. Smart and practical. Raised by shepherds. Is connected to nature, to the earth. A skillful hostess. Late teens.

Paulina - Wife, then widow of Antigonus. A loyal lady-in-waiting to Hermione. Brilliant, tough, wise, fearless. Speaks truth to power. 30’s - 60’s, later will age 16 years.

Emilia - An attendant of Hermione and Mamillius. A caretaker. 20’s - 70’s.

Mopsa and Dorcas - Two shepherdesses. Not the brightest bulbs in bohemia. Rough and tumble ladies. Both women have been with the clown. With the clown they make up a bizarre and comedic inverse of the triangle of act 1. Crude and funny. 20’s-30’s.

Time - young or old. The chorus. A narrator. Somehow has insight into the nature of time. Can talk to an audience.

Jailer - A man with a conscience. reluctant guard to Hemione’s cell. Does what he can to help her. 20’s - 70’s.

Officer of the court - A judge or priest like figure. 40’s-70’s.
