BREAKDOWN

The 2019-2020 season includes:

If the Spirit Moves

Book and Lyrics by Germaine Shames;

Music by Erin Murray Quinlan

Performances in late September

Rehearsals begin in late August

A disillusioned expat Dadaist artist returns after World War I. Needing to earn a living, she sets out to impersonate a spirit medium—only to discover that she is the real deal. A shell-shocked war hero, a charity matron mourning her daughter, and a young war widow flock to the reluctant medium and are spontaneously healed. A wealthy male client falls in love with her. When her former love comes courting in the form of a directionless Dada poet, she must choose, not only between two men, but two radically different outlooks on life. If the Spirit Moves is a tender tale of recovery and healing in which rich and poor, living and dead, transcend their differences through laughter, tears, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Seeking 4 women / 2 men

Daphne: young artist - 20s, Desiree: emotionally scarred actress - 20s.

Mrs. Barnes: young widow - 20s (legit soprano).

Lady Aspen: bereaved society matron - 40s – 60s (legit soprano).

Kurt: disillusioned Dadaist - 20.

Edward: wealthy, shell-shocked ex-soldier - 20s.

Ghost Quartet

Book, lyrics and music by Dave Malloy

Performances in late October

Rehearsals begin early October

A camera breaks and four friends drink in an interwoven tale spanning seven centuries, with a murderous sister, a tree house astronomer, a bear, a subway, and the ghost of Thelonious Monk. The story draws from several fairy tales and ghost stories, including Snow White and Rose Red, Edgar Allen Poe's Fall of the House of Usher, and One Thousand and One Nights (commonly known as Arabian Nights). Cast members present the story and music as a concept album and accompany themselves on keyboard, violin, ukulele, guitar, mandolin, and percussion.

Seeking 2 women / 2 men.

Available cast members from last year’s production will be offered their roles, but we are auditioning for possible replacements.

Please highlight whether you play guitar, mandolin, ukulele, cello and/or percussion.

A Flight of Short Musicals

Performances for one weekend in late January

Rehearsals begin early January

We’ll present an evening of 5-6 ten to twenty-minute musicals.

Seeking 2 women / 2 men with versatile voices (contemporary MT to operatic) to rotate through the musicals.

First Lady Suite

Words and Music by Michael John LaChiusa

Performances in Mid-March

Rehearsals begin Mid-February

First Lady Suite is an enthralling look into the lives of some of history’s most neglected figures, the wives of U.S. presidents. The musical is presented in four vignettes. The first piece, Over Texas, takes place aboard Air Force One on November 22nd, 1963. Mary Gallagher, the First Lady’s personal secretary, and Evelyn Lincoln, personal secretary to the President, are trying to relax as they fly into Dallas. While napping, Mary’s dreams become portentous nightmares as they are haunted by a ghostly Jackie and an eerie Lady Bird. Where’s Mamie? takes place in Ike and Mamie’s bedroom at the White House, yet quickly turns into a time-travel fantasy as Mamie, melancholic and alone on her birthday, is paid a visit by the celebrated opera star Marian Anderson. Marian whisks Mamie off to Algiers to confront Ike about an affair and warn him of the racial strife he’ll face later as President. Olio presents first daughter Margaret Truman at a recital trying her best to sing as she’s constantly upstaged by First Lady Bess. The final piece of the Suite, Eleanor Sleeps Here, is a heart-rending examination of the relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickok as they’re flown over Washington by Amelia Earhart.

Seeing 4 to 6 women / 1 man to play multiple characters across the four vignettes.

Over Texas: Mary Gallagher, Evelyn Lincoln, Jackie Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, Aide

Where’s Mamie: Mamie Eisenhower, Marian Anderson, Kay Summersby, Dwight Eisenhower/Aide

Olio: Margaret Truman, Bess Truman

Eleanor Sleeps Here: Eleanor Roosevelt, Lorena Hickok, Amelia Earhart

Anne and Will

Book by Sandra Hochman and Cindy Polich,

Lyrics by Sandra Hochman,

Music by Galt MacDermot and Gary William Friedman

Performances in Mid-May

Rehearsals in April

A staged reading of a new musical by Pulitzer-prize nominated poet Sandra Hochman and local playwright Cindy Polich, with new music by Grammy-winning composer of Hair, Galt MacDermot, and Tony-nominated composer Gary William Friedman. Much has been written about William Shakespeare and his illustrious career. Less is known about the women in his life. This musical imagines that four women were instrumental in putting Shakespeare on the path to literary greatness – his mother, his wife, Queen Elizabeth, and a plucky barmaid who may have saved his life in a treacherous London.

Seeking 2 women / 2 men

Anne Shakespeare.

Will Shakespeare.

Mother/Queen Elizabeth/Barmaid.

Marlowe/King James/Scribe.
