BREAKDOWN
When it comes to Dorothea “Polly” Noonan, the blunt, profane, decades-long defender of Albany’s Democratic Party machine, politics is only personal - especially now that her hero, “mayor for life” Erastus Corning II, is battling for party control while at the same time fighting the fiercest primary challenge of his life. The True is an intimate portrait of the bounds of love, loyalty, and female power in the male-dominated world of 1977 patronage politics.
HOWARD C. NOLAN, late 40s - A handsome, wealthy lawyer now launching a primary challenge to Erastus in the Albany democratic mayoral primary. Confident, sharp, capable, and unabashed by his powerful opponent. Irish-American.
CHARLIE RYAN, late 50s - A savvy Democratic political machine operator and organizer, and a loyalist for the opposition: tough, no-nonsense, and resentful of Erastus and Polly – and almost her equal. Feels he’s earned his share of power. Irish-American.
BILL MCCORMICK, late 20s - A young colleague of Polly’s. Attractive, friendly and upbeat. Open and eager to please. Still new to politics, he is naive and it shows, especially in the face of Polly's dedication. Doesn’t understand the personal, Irish-centric tribal politics that dominate Albany.
BETTY CORNING, early 60s (No dialogue) - The intensely private wife of Erastus Corning, who leads a separate life. As Waspy as he. Though she’s never heard, when seen, she has a striking presence. Thin, but not frail, and always coiffed.
DOROTHEA “POLLY” NOONAN, late 50s - The long-time right-hand woman and passionate defender of Mayor Erastus Corning II, and a major Democratic party power broker, now faced with losing her relationship with Erastus. The ultimate loyalist; charming, vociferous, cajoling, foul-mouthed, and pugnacious. Proud of her Scottish and French-Canadian descent. [ROLE CAST]
PETER NOONAN, late 50s - A successful businessman, married to Polly and close friend of Erastus. Measured, somewhat reserved, but pleasant and lightly ironic. Still very close to his wife, he’s as much Polly’s foil as he is her anchor and support system. Irish-American. [ROLE CAST]
ERASTUS CORNING II, 60s - Unhappily married to Betty Corning, he spends evenings with Polly and Peter. Has been Albany mayor for 30 years, and is more than comfortable with power; but infuriated by any challenge to it. Mannered, erudite, charming, and deeply reserved, emotionally, which would explain his profound affinity for Dorothea. His intermittent hip pain shows his age. Born into privilege, a died-in-the-wool WASP. [ROLE CAST]
