Shakespeare's masterpiece is both a tragedy and comedy, filled with intensely dramatic situations, centered around Prospero's singular pursuit of bloody revenge, which is then transformed into forgiveness, love and harmony for all at the end of the play. The script calls for several songs, mostly sung by Ariel, which will be composed by sound designer Daniel Baker. The production will be modern dress (sets and costumes designed by Beowulf Boritt). The text will be somewhat edited for length, but the Shakespearean language, verse, and style will remain.

Seeking following Principal Role only at these auditions:

Ariel:

Male. 20s-30s. A spirit who was once enslaved on an enchanted island, he was liberated by a great magician (Prospero) and became the industrious servant of his new master. He is energetic, mischievous, and magical, able to traverse the length of the island in an instant and to change shapes at will. He radiates joy, hope and light, but he deeply longs to be free. He carries out virtually every task that Prospero needs accomplished in the play and, in so doing, ultimately wins his freedom. Sings several songs – actor should be prepared to sing a short piece of his own – accompanist will be provided- or actor may sing accappella or with an instrument of his own. Good mover. Speaks verse and classical language with ease, clarity, and truthfulness. Color-blind casting (people of all ethnicities will be equally considered).
